Does any one have any idea what the weight capacity on older snap on boxes like this one, its pretty full and I've always worried its too full. A couple of the drawer fronts are slightly separated from the sides but I don't If it was like that when I got it. It fell when the previous owner had it so that could be why, I will get some pics of that tomorrow, here is the box and the heavier drawers, thanks 1d4a99ac791f9169e65024cc8e38e9ff.jpgf951c7b906039ad2f64ebb67be568670.jpga49182ce89fafb68ce70b48976bd9ec0.jpg7318d0b40e41a59b2869a77c97f5e76f.jpge175905efe7f246455ffae42c057d46f.jpg7c67aecdf52af97fdb0aa7589515005e.jpg9c6f1e54af02f0b80406139c56739cd0.jpg

Fricton or ball bearing slides? Being only a 21" deep box, I'd think it would be hard to overload. If friction slides and the drawers are hard to open, probably a sign it's pretty loaded, but unless the slides and channels are badly worn, I doubt a failure. I know the newer versions were rated for 3600 lbs and that's based on the casters.

if you're looking for an excuse to upgrade or buy another box, then yes it is obviously overloaded.

No, not looking to upgrade but when I have some extra cash I'd like a top box, it is ball bearing but the drawers pictured open kind of hard.

Lube the slides, you don't have near the weight I have in a few of my drawers and they roll just fine for a box that's been loaded since the eighties.

Weight capacity of older Snap On boxes?.......lots. Mine's a KRL and those older KR series were built even heavier than mine. That drawer is loaded down with bearing, seal and bushing and race drivers, C-clamps, tow chains, hoist chains, clutch tools, blah blah and well.....me also of course.

The ones I've had felt like they were waiting for someone to test their strength with molten lead...

I have that same box, mine was built in 88. To me it seems the more I put in the drawers the better they open and close. I've got another box, a KR 660 that is of the same vintage. A lot of the slides are gunked up and are really hard to open. Right now that box is in line to be redone. I just need to find time:willy_nil

If that is a KR655B cabinet, the catalog says 2,000 lb. capacity. I thought it was impossible to overload those boxes.

Had a KRL751 top chest similar dimensions to the Op's cabinet, one drawer was loaded with 3/4" and 1" drive stuff and you could pull out the drawer with 1 finger

I would say you aren't even close to overloading it, or have even reached its intended capacity.

We have an old kr series like that at work, with friction slides, and one of the drawers is full of bushing drivers, and their handles. When I say full, I mean packed.

They are basically solid 1 to 1 1/4" thick steel disks (with a 5/8" center hole) and are heavy, way heavier than hand tools. Handles are also solid, bar stock, about 1" diameter and 6 inches long - give or take.

They have been in that drawer for years and get used regularly.

Drawer takes some effort to open, but part of that is due to the general condition of the box.

Its been beat, spray bombed black at some time in the remote past, if the slides have ever been cleaned I'd be surprised. It lives in FL, so I would imagine a fair amount of sand is in there as well.

I know another guy who has a big old Snap on box, not sure of the model, but something in the kr1000 line, the three bay.

It has a big bottom center drawer full of pullers and puller parts, also jam packed, and they are heavy. This drawer doesn't work well at all but does function, he says it worked fine before the fork lift got lowered on it while it was open.

I would start with some slide maintenance to see if that would help. if the drawers are hard to open/pull, check the slides. if a bunch of junk is built up in them, a thorough clean up will really help with the drawer function. Snap On can help searching out replacement parts if need be.

I have a taco wagon where the drawer fronts separated from the spot welds as well. I tacked them back together and they're good to go. The drawers probably had a lot of loose, heavy stuff rolling around at one time, so I'd not be surprised if that happened to yours.
of course, more tool boxes wouldn't hurt either :)
good luck!
