Weird Craigslist transaction

I needed to mark out some underground utilities. They were after the meter so I couldn't call 811. It costs $600 to have them marked out by a private company, which isn't unreasonable, but I figured I'd rather buy the tool and do it myself.

I came across this Pipe Horn 100 on Craigslist. After some quick research I found out this is the tool most utility companies use to mark out buried lines. So I went to look at it. I tested it in the sellers garage, bought it and used it to mark out the utilities. Worked great.

Here's the weird part. When I handed the seller the $50 I paid for it, all the air rushed out of the garage. So I held my breath and ran out before I suffocated.

I'm going to give you a "YOU ****" because you didn't technically ask for it.

However, this part leads me to beleive you were soliciting for a "you ****" without actually asking for one. Lololol

I take it you don't have " call before you dig " in NJ. Out here we call and they come out and mark all utilities. Doesn't matter which side of the meter. So you paid $50 for a free service. No **** for you.

Damn YOU ****! Now you can easily earn your money back finding other people's utilities once you find yours!

I wouldn't recommend that. There is a lot of liability involved and it could get expensive if you miss-mark something.

Yep, 3M Dynatel is what we use too. The one on my truck is a lot older than the one in the link you provided but it's the same thing. I've seen the one in the OP but I don't remember who had it. I think it was a contractor that didn't use one very often. The locating service around here uses one that works more similar to the pipehorn the op bought but they are a lot beefier and the base is about 10 times bigger.

Like I said, I've seen those before but no real utility is going to use that as it's only means to locate their plant. For private use and uses like what this one was bought for I agree, he stole it. Good on you Mike007!

I still say you should have doused it but to each their own. lol

In FL , and in the locality the OP lives in the locating service will not locate past the meter (or tap depending on what utility). The person doing the work is responsible for locating services. I don't know how they get away with it but they won't touch a service cable.

While that was a good deal, I can't condone you breaking the rules. We all know you just sucked yourself and you should be a bit embarrassed. It is always better when someone else does the sucking.

I do get a kick out of your work arounds though.
