Re: weird screwdrive

Its a "Yankee" screwdriver. Has spiral cuts on the shank. You push it in, it turns the screw, slide the reverse selector and it works to remove the same way.

Re: weird screwdrive

The handle moves up and down. As it moves down it should rotate the shaft turning the screw. Can't tell if there is in your pic but I think there is a tiny switch that selects direction or to lock the handle. They have drill similar to that called a Yankee drill or push drill.

Edit: Blah folks beat me to it while I was writing...oh well I'll leave the post.

Re: weird screwdrive

I have that exact screw driver or damn close with the funky plastic handle. Those Yankee screwdrivers don't get the recognition they deserve, great tool, especially before the cordless tools came along. Get, or make yourself a 1/4" bit holder for it so it can hold bits and sockets, makes it very versatile. I used mine once to pull apart an entire car dash at a junk yard, made quick work of it. Great for pulling apart a fridge or anything with tons of screws.

I've got one. You can also get them with chucks and use them for light drilling.

Can't see using it with all the cordless stuff I have, but mostly since I lack experience with one, and have plenty with the cordless.

IMHO they were made to work with wood screws that have pilot holes drilled, and aren't all that much of a general purpose tool.

I used to carry one of those in my tool bag when I was in the service. Perfect for taking the covers off of shipboard light fixtures in a hurry.

I have a few of these that I have gotten in lots of older tools. All of the ones I got were very dry, and didnt slide right. A few drops of oil helps a ton, all of the ones I own work great once oiled. I would like to find one with a chuck...
