Weirdest item in your toolbox?

Cool lookin dead critters I find in peoples belly pans and grills. Its mostly huge *** flying insects.. for a while I had a crazy looking dead bird I found way up in the back of a belly pan.

a box of dental hand tools and pipe cleaners. I restore a lot of antique furniture and the dental tools are nice for scraping carvings clean and I use them all the time for other things. The pipe cleaners have been in there for 45 years in the same Kennedy box. Never used them. I don't smoke. I put them in there in Detroit in 1968 and moved it to Seattle and then to california in 76 and they are still there. I forget what I used them for. LOL Then again I am old.

i would suggest not using the nail polish for closing cuts... nasty stuff.

i would suggest ethyl cyanoacrylate, AKA super glue, but only certain super glues are pure, or nearly pure ethyl. loctite professional super glue is pure ethyl cyanoacrylate, and works great for sealing cuts.... and isnt affected by automotive chemicals/oils.

moisture is what caused super glues to harden, thats why they bond skin nearly instantly. close the cut with your fingers, and lay a bead right across the closed slice, it will cure instantly from the moisture in your skin and the little bit of blood there. also causes the scar to be very minimal, unlike stitches or butterflys. re-apply when it wears off.

I always knew super glue was said to be good for cuts, but never really tried it. I am going out tommorrow and buying some. Is that cheap dollar store 10 pack for a buck work, or is it not "pure"?

you want ethyl cyanoacrylate. there are many different cyanoacrylate esters, such as ethyl C, methyl C, butyl C, isobutyl C, etc...

DermaBond, medical grade superglue "stitches" is 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate, VetBond and LiquiBand etc... is n-butyl-cyanoacrylate,and used a lot more internally in surgeries and such..

you cant get the medical grade stuff, and if you could, it would be something like a couple hundred dollars for a couple CCs.

the reason you want to get ethyl cyanoacrylate, and not one of the many other esters is because they all have different properties, most are toxic, and most cause a significant heat when curing, pure ethyl ester doesnt create heat and is nearly non-toxic(used by medical field). many of the cheap dollar store super glues wont give a specific ingredient, only listing something like "contains cyanoacrylate ester"

the "Loctite Professional" is nearly pure ethyl ester, only cost a couple bucks. walmart has it in the automotive section by the RTV silicone. one bottle will last years if only used for cuts. use the dollar store stuff for fixing grammas knick nacks, not your skin.

edit - also, dont use the gel type, or the "super improved special this and that" types, or the stuff that turns color when drying. just straight liquid ethyl. look at MSDS if you can.

dont get me wrong... the cheap stuff will hold your skin together.


i just figure, if you are gonna make a habit of using it on cuts and scraped knuckles, its best to not be putting some toxic **** in your open wounds. i have gotten in many arguments with people i work with about using superglues on wounds, so i became educated on the subject after a couple times. people get freaked out when they see you coating a ****** wound with good ol' superglue for some reason.... tell em "doesnt even sting!"

i will coat skinned fingers and knuckles, just to keep grease and crusty engine liquids from getting in the wounds.

***** hose makes a very good filter. You can put it over the upper radiator inlet and clamp the hose over it. Yoou'd be surprised what it collects.

The Vaseline is for packing external oil pumps to prime them

Yup, always had beer or a bottle of bourbon on the top of my toolbox when I'm between jobs and it's at home. Had that discussion with a former co-worker one night drinking beer in his garage, set a beer down on his service cart and realized that it was the first time in 10 years he'd been able to do such a thing since his boxes have always rolled from shop to shop.

must've worked in the wrong shops... i hate wiping the bottle rings off my box. I very rarely partake in the festivities myself, but have had morning cleaning up bottles before customers showed up.

cyanoacrylate.... has nothing to do with cyanide tho... google is your friend. doctors use it extensively for internal and external flesh mending.

superglue is much better than nail polish chemically. and nail polish ***** for holding skin together anyway. id rather use electrical tape that nail polish.
