Well, had some fun with my wife's van yesterday. As was previously mentioned, I polished the lenses on the headlight assemblies. This work did not seem to last long; the lenses started getting cataracts again. This time I noticed that the plastic lenses had a lot of crazing in them so I decided to buy new assemblies and install them. (For the record, I want to go kick an engineer in the gonads for designing this)


One has to remove the bumper fascia to get at the bolts that hold the assemblies in place.

Sooo much fun.

Here it is with the new assemblies in place. We took a drive last night and it is a wonderful experience to be able to see at night.

Dan, I am glad to see you had a bit of a vacation in between the stress of work and your parents. I am just started having to deal with a similar issue, my father-in-law is getting dementia and my father’s health is deteriorating so we are starting to have to think about longer term care. The stress can takes its toll some I am glad you were able to get your parents settled.

As for fun projects....The radial engine looks very cool and I will second the vote to see some video of it starting up!

I will back you up on your engineer hunt. The Camaro has several things like that you just wanna punch somebody and call them stupid. Nice headlights by the way!

I wanna buy some for the Camaro but the last time I checked the OEM ones are $300 for the pair. I will keep polishing mine till the plastic is gone I guess.

Hi Bret, you might want to check Rock Auto or some of the local car parts guys. I got this set for my wife's van for $129 which included all of the bulbs (4 in each). That surprised the heck out of me. And these were made in Canada, not China. These assemblies are HUGE.

Update time!


Finished making the tubes and tank for the dry sump on the radial engine.

I also had to make some custom fasteners with oil flow lines. Here I am making the hex head on one of them.

And here are all of the parts assembled to the engine.

I still have to make some gaskets to seal things up. Right now the engine is with another member of the club to drill oil lines in the crank and install the connecting rods, pistons and rings.


Then this was dropped off this past Monday.

It was time to do some long overdue grading around the back portion of the property for drainage. The drainage was OK but it needed some improvements. This thing was fun but you have to pay attention.


And I finally decided to buy one of these.

We had lots of logs and other tree parts here that needed to be cut to length and split. This thing works great!

We thought about shoveling and raking over a few weeks time. (My back ached just at the thought) Then my lovely wife called to see what the cost would be to rent a Bobcat for the day and it was a no brainer. We had the work done in a few hours.


We also borrowed a friends dump trailer. We took two loads of our extra dirt/sand/rock out to her place to fill in where the rains had washed out her road in places. Win/win!

Thanks Steve. I really like making parts from billet. Cranking handles is what gets me into my happy place. That and some Flim and the BB's playing on the stereo.


The Bobcat was a time and back saver.

So to help work off yesterday's food free-for-all, I started cutting up some more firewood. Made lots of sawdust.

Then I made a shop couch from an old second row seat from an Explorer.

And got the seal of approval from Ashley

The guys have a wooden prop for this little guy. I was kinda surprised at the size of the thing. It's going to be windy when they fire this thing up.

Rock Update


Now that the weather has turned cooler, we had the very front of the house finished with the hardscaping. We had 13 ton more of plum colored rock delivered and spread. No more dirt and mud in front of the house. All of the drainage we did has paid off. No more worries about our property getting flooded.

Hello open12 and thanks for stopping by. I love the fact that we see each others threads from literally across the world. That's humbling in my opinion.


Yes, the rains can get a bit intense at times around here but right now, with what we have done with the grading and hardscaping, we feel confident that we are secure. If we get a good monsoon rain, the rock will help slow down the speed of the draining water which caused a lot of our issues in the past. That and the fact that the county fubarred the road drainage.

Thanks Steve. I actually had to do it due to peer pressure. Darn neighbors around us has so many lights, you can probably see the street from the space station.

Yes, the rocks are definitely large enough not to get lodged in tires.

I collect them in my desk until I have a pocketful and take them back home!
