A little background story, we moved from the city to a rural lot about 6 years ago. Last November we moved about 4 miles down the road to a newer house. I've always had a garage/shop and this house didn't have anything. Not even a shed! Needless to say I needed one and so the build starts. It will be 2x6 construction with 10' ceilings.

This is where it's going. What a mess!

Wife came home to this and took a pic. 50 yards of 3/4 down. Doesn't look that bad!

A lot of shovelling!!!

Second guessing why I didn't get them to dump it outside and use my friend's skidsteer again.

Well it took some time but we got it done! It will have 16"x16" thickened edge with 6" concrete. This had to be drawn up by an engineer as per building codes and that's what he called for.

Most of the loops are done. I need one more loop yet. I had a little bit of a rough go figuring this out as I thought I bought 4-300' rolls when in reality I bought 4-250' rolls. Once I figured that out I purchased another roll. so I will have 5 loops and might break it down into 2 zones. I'm still undecided.

I took some reference pics for if I ever decide to install a hoist.

Then finally after a long time of trying to find someone to do the pour, it got started just this past Thursday. I played around with doing the pour myself but was really happy that I decided to leave it to the pros. This will probably be the only thing I contract out.

I stripped the forms yesterday and was going to seal it this morning. I was just getting set up when I could see the clouds rolling in and could hear the thunder. Forecast wasn't calling for rain. Good thing I waited!

So this is where I am currently. It has been a slow build up to this point as I have been doing the majority of the work myself. The wife and son have been helping in doses. Next weekend we start building the walls hopefully! :rocker::D

lol! ^

Heated Floors.

Looking very good! Nice job and very clean install. I think it would be in your best interest to let the Concrete cure a while before sealing it.

What you have, is called a monolithic slab in the states. The footer or the 16x16 perimeter is poured with the main slab. cool build.

Nice hard work to complete slab with radiant heat. Bet your biceps, pecs, triceps, deltoids, and lats are all IN SHAPE after shoveling by hand all that gravel !!! ;)

Curious about layout of garage doors with shop being long and skinny?? Will you have a drive-thru design with doors on each end?? Maybe also a door on side??

Thanks for the compliments guys!
Looks awesome, I'm just down the road from you and currently building my garage at the same time :)
Hmmm, there's only 2 that I know of being built around here at the moment. One is almost finished and the other they just put the trusses up the other day. Send me a PM and let me know which one is yours. ;) What a small world!

Basically it is being spit into 2-26x24 garages back to back. I will have 2-9x8 doors on the front. The front half of the garage will be used for parking our daily drivers. The back half will be for a project vehicle and room for snowmobiles and dirtbikes.

I may build a wall down the middle splitting the front half from the back half. If I do this I will put another 9x8 door in that wall. Once I see what the cost is to heat the entire shop for a winter will be the determining factor. If it is too expensive to heat all the space to a comfortable temperature I will put up the dividing wall. This will allow me to have the in-floor heat set to just above freezing and then I will use a supplimental heater for the back half to bring it up to a nice working temp.

There will also be another roll up door on the side near the back for the snowmobiles. I was originally going to put one right at the back and have it so all 3 lined up and I could drive right through but I will probably build a lean to at the back next year to work as a garden shed. Hope this all makes sense.

I know exactly what it's called. The frost line in MB is a little different than NV ;)

From my research (in Ontario, however), a slab this big should have deep footers all the way around the perimeter. Does this slab meet code in MB?

Yes this garage required an engineers stamped drawing. He mentioned he would've liked to see 18x18 thickened edge but was ok with 16x16. The rebar was supposed to be at 18" centers but I ended up putting them at 16" centers which will help for strength. I was originally thinking of doing pole construction but was worried about our winters and the frost moving the poles around. I've seen many things move around in this climate even being deeper than the so called frost line. Just made me nervous.

How soon did the last 3 meters of concrete show up? Any issues to match up with original pour or did you partition it off. Who miscalculated the amount needed?
It only took about 25 minutes. They are only 15 minutes away. I was told that's what I needed by someone in the biz and also using an online calculator I found.

Thanks. Just waiting for my package to be delivered so I can start framing. I was hoping it would be here by now.

This is what we got done in about 8 hours with 1 old guy and 2 older guys. My brother is high 50's, my bro-in-law is in his low 60's, and I'm in my high 40's.

Thanks guys! It might be a little slow going for the next little while. I'm going to putt away at it by myself with some help from my son.

It rained all day Saturday so I didn't get anything done at all. :( Today was good and bad. The good was we got the roof sheeted. The bad is I dropped a borrowed framing nailer near the end of the day and now it's leaking. Also my compressor started making a very loud noise and I think the piston is buggered. It will pump up to 95 psi and will just keep pumping.

Recently I've been looking at getting a nice and big upright but I still wanted this to work as it's a good portable one. Not really the time to be spending money on a compressor when I need to buy garage doors. :(

This past week I have more done as well but didn't take pics yet. I did the Typar wrap, installed one window,(going to pick up another one today.) Installed the garage door frames and dug down on the front and one side and installed the insulation up to the concrete.

I will be installing the other window this weekend along with my man door. Then I will probably be closing the garage door openings up with some OSB and moving some more stuff in. I finally decided on Richards Wilcox doors and am going to purchase them next week and they will take 3 weeks to get in so I want to close things up and make it secure until then.

I still need to run my electrical and am waiting on a friend to get me some supplies, hopefully for free. ;) After that and the doors get installed it will sit until next summer. Money only goes so far unfortunately. I will get some pics of how it sits right now up soon.

Well here goes my first post. Great job on the build, that was a hell of a pile of gravel. Your slab prep was awesome, insulation to rebar. As far as your thickened edge it is a thicker and wider than mine also engineered slab, just poured yesterday. Central Alberta Canada. I build for a living and it depends on the engineer for size and rebar requirements. That slab will last a lifetime or 2.

Nice garage!!!!! You guys up Canada way don't have to use felt paper under your shingles? We're also required now to have weathergard sealer down for the first 3' of roof.
