I mean, if you're welding jet engine or other Aerospace parts, go for it.
If you're doing BBQ smoker or trailer hitch parts, get a 4x8 Hardiboard sheet and lay it on a solidly framed 3/4", ply topped table, and be done with it. Marc

Sharpie draw on and/ or Screw through the Hardi into the Ply to make jigs for repetatives, or even a single if you want. Marc
Lol... I've used a sturdy Plywood welding table a lot. Gets a few burn marks but doesn't warp. I figured most guys would laugh at using wood, but I guess I'm not alone 
I do like the clamping holes on the drilled tables and this brand is not very expensive

Love mine , its a 36"×42" with a 12"×36" wing and 8 angles (2 of each size) i use it alot and is great for using the plasma as well. Get the lwg and castor kit as well. The tools are where it gets spendy.

04chase, was that table built by A.C. Gilbert? (of Erector Set fame)
basically , its just as versatile as one , using a bunch of 5/8 shoulder bolts 1/2 long can secure any of the angles to the table and infititly adjustable. i wish i had the money to buy one of the big stronghand / buildpro sets to secure more things but ive made this work good so far.
I need to practice tig more and this table had helped but time hasnt. I have a aluminum project i need to get in motion but im not great at tig welding it yet. im almost considering a spool gun and bigger mig since it will be quite a bit of fabbing and welding.
Difference between that and an erector set is that the only bolts are the ones holding on the casters, and even those go into nuts welded in place.
Mine was easy-peasy to put together. The tabs all have little notches in the end that you weld into, leaving little above the surface to grind off and keeping things balanced so there's no tendency to warp.
