Welded up some wall mounts for speakers

This is an abstract from my garage thread but I figured guys might like it here.

I got home and really had an urge to make something. I planned these speaker mounts in my head and just went at it. Tried something new - cutting aluminum on a wood miter saw. I have heard it works super well and... it does!

This is 3/16" aluminum both the base plates and the tubing. Pretty taxing on the welder, I just ran it wide open at 180A with a 3/32" tungsten and #10 cup on a WP17 torch.

You'll notice that the two mounting holes are counter sunk for my wood screws. Also, there's a 1/2" or so hole drilled in the center of where the square tube meets each plate. This is because I am going to run the speaker wire through the mount up into the speaker terminals. This will be super sleek because there will be no visible wires.

So now, all I have to do is put up insulation and drywall, prime, paint, and hang these puppies up!

Thanks man - the speakers actually sound reaaaaaally good even at medium/low volume. I am not huge into blasting them, but, I could - they handle it!

So is your miter saw 10 or 12" and what blade is that exactly?

Its a bosch 5312, 12" dual bevel slider. The blade is the stock blade it shipped with. Carbide tipped but unsure of tooth count.

Pick up a saw blade designed for non-ferrous metal cutting and you'll enjoy using the miter saw even more (and you won't dull the teeth of your wood blade).

A lot of the saw blades used for non-ferrous are for special saws and don't run as high RPM as the wood saw. At least that's what I have noticed.

They're just a **** pair of calipers I use for scribing. For instance my aluminum plate is 4 by X, so to center something I set the caliper to 2" and then use the edge and scribe down the length.

Couldn't be any louder or more annoying than cutting aluminum on with the miter saw.

Make sure you clamp your work down really well!! Things could go wrong in a hurry with a blade with so few teeth.I have the same saw. It's been 3 times I nearly lost fingers to mine now Last time, I fractured my finger tip or some thing. Hurt like a ***** for weeks.
Use wax on the blade as a lubricant to keep the Alu. from sticking too the teeth.
