Welder inside toolbox?

So the old man gave me his older lower half tool cabinet. I already have a big one but figured since he wasn't using this one i might as well take it.

So my garage isn't overly big 21x20, pretty well organized so I was trying to think where to put this or what to do with it.

After looking at the bottom compartment of it my Licoln 180 welder fits in there perfectly. If I'd cut out either side for exhaust and cable passthrough this might work. Door could be open when its used, and closed when not, also this would keep it somewhat closed off and away from dust. And away from prying eyes when the garage door is open.

Whats your guy's thoughts any issues with this? I'm more concerned with it being enclosed due to heat/exhausting. I was also thinking of putting the welder on top (it fits) but then its just out in the open again, currently its under my work bench and any debris/dust just falls on it.

If you're worried, which there is no reason to be, put it on bottom mount drawer slides and slide it out.
No holes to cut....
This is a fifteen dollar, half hour project.
Don't bolt it to the rails and you can lift it up top for maintenance if you insist on using it while it's in that cabinet.
It weighs 40 lbs maybe and has a handle...I doubt it would take 4 seconds to remove or replace it in the bottom, as storage.

I wouldn't want it down there just for the issue of wire changes and dealling with wire ratsnests from time to time.

I'd also worry about airflow but depending where the vents are you could cut a hole or another door in the cabinet somewhere.

as far as dust and debris on the machine,
I keep mine on top of a cart, and cover it up with the same anti-splatter blanket I use when I'm welding.

Do it. Mine has never nested, never had a single drive issue. Vent it but there is a difference in moderate or hard use. 25 years, maybe 50 rolls of wire thru it, maybe more.

I would mount to the top put a rack on one side for a bottle so you can’t run hard wire and flux core. The bottom I would use for grinders and a chop saw then you would have two draws for your tools for welding.

Like Floridaboy, I'd mount it on top. However, I would the bottom area for welding helmet, gloves, jacket and other welding gear.

If you mount it like you have, how do you see to adjust wire speed or voltage ?

I realize the way I had the unit in there the door opening for the wire speed and wire changes is not accessible. But I could just as easily flip the welder around so the door opening from the welder would match the door opening of the actual tool cabinet.

I sold a bottom box to a guy that was going to use it as a welding cart. I bet he didn't think to put it in the bottom part of the box.

Looks good and space saving.

I like it except--
Adjusting knobs would require awkward head bending while reaching in there
And mainly; Where does the gas cylinder go? Having to keep that separate is the big downside I have with this idea.

Absolutely this. Toss some grinder mounts on the side, clamp mount, etc. Helmet you want to keep clean and it will fit nicely in the bottom compartment.

vent it and be done.

ps.: put it the other way around so you can swap wire roll...lol

but I agree putting it on top is a better idea. with room for helmet, glove, jacket, grinder, grinding disk, etc, etc in the actuel drawer and bottom space.
Then Add some hook for cable and you have yourself a great welding cart with everything on hand

I built myself a welding cart and put a 2 drawer 26" tool box in it and 2 drawer is just OK. (but I have a TIG machine on it too.)

The op wants it to fit under the bench. Could maybe add a door on the toolbox side or relocate the controls to a more accessible area.

I built my welding table with the welders in the table allowing for plenty of air flow and access for wire swap and access.

I could see why you are considering the bottom especially if you don't weld often but I would definitely put it on top. Get a welder cover from Lincoln if you are worried about dust. Attached a SWAG off road tool holder or similar to one side to hang tools and fill the drawers with the rest of the small tools and supplies. On the opposite side make a mount for a gas bottle. Then use the bottom compartment for the big stuff like welding helmet, gloves, face shield, etc.

Very nice cabinet and its even better that it was free.
