Welder jog

Can someone explain the jog feature on a welder ?? What it does and where it would be used ??

It allows you to advance the wire feed while keeping the gun electrically cold. On conventional machines when you have the machine powered on and pull the gun trigger to activate and advance the wire feed the welding circuit is energized which CAN be a safety issue both shock and flash if the wire come into contact with the ground lead.

It's one of those features that many do not need.

If it's a option when the gun is cold wouldn't u adjust speed from the dial on the unit ?

It's usually a way to feed the wire without it being 'hot' or without turning the gas on.

millermatic 252 manual :

6-3. Jog Mode
If the trigger on either gun is held for more than 3 seconds without striking an arc, the unit will automatically shut off
weld power (and shielding gas output on MIG or push/pull gun), but will feed wire continuously at the preset wire feed
speed (which may be faster or slower than Run−in Speed) until trigger is released. Jog wire feed speed is the same as
weld wire feed speed, so any time jog speed is changed, be sure to change back to weld wire feed speed before
welding. Jog wire feed speed for the spool gun and push/pull gun is limited to 300 ipm (7.6 m/min)

The jog function just feeds the wire but at a faster rate. At work we have the Miller 350P. Its a Push/Pull gun with a 25' cable, even with the jog function it takes a while to get the wire to the torch.
