Quick Question...

I have an old school L-Tec Migmaster 250 and plans to purchase a millermatic 212 soon...

I need to put a new outlet in my garage to run the Migmaster 250 and it requires a 50amp outlet & Breaker..

I would prefer to put in only one "welder dedicated" outlet. Will it be ok to run the MM212 on the 50 amp breaker even though it recommends a 30amp service?

Or is it going to be best to put in a 30amp outlet and a 50amp outlet.

Thanks!

50 amp breaker, wires, and outlet ('standard' welding outlet is a NEMA6-50). Done.

You can run a '30 amp' device on a 50 amp circuit (breaker, wires, and outlet), but you can't run a '50 amp' device on a 30 amp circuit.

The breaker is there to protect the wires (in the wall), the wires are there to get the electricity from the breaker to the outlet, and the outlet is there to give you something to plug into.

You got it right. 50 amp circuit is great for your machines. Just run the same plug on both welders and you got it. I run the same plug on all but the plasma cutter because it came with a different one. In the new garage it will be on it's own plug anyway, extension cord if needed to reach out.

I wired my welder with 10 gauge and realized that I only had a 30 amp breaker so I ran with it. Haven't tripped it yet with about a dozen welding jobs completed. I'm only 2 blocks from the hardware store if I decide to go with a 50 amp.

What size wire is required for the above set up for a 50 amp breaker?

That depends on what type of wire u use and IF voltage drop/wire length is an issue.

Voltage drop aside, IF the outlet will ONLY be used for welders and is marked as such, then #10 cu wire can be used.

If the outlet will be used for other equipment in addition to a welder, and if u use NM-B wire aka 'Romex', then use #6-2 for a 50a breaker. If u use THHN in conduit, then 2 #8 cu wires with 1 #10 cu wire for a 50a breaker!

I Migmaster may require an 8 wire. Lincoln has a 250 class that allows for 10 in pipe and 8 cable. A common buzz box can use a 10 cable and 50A (they come with 12 cord). You could use 12 wire and 50A breaker for a 211. Only reason for a large wire for the Migmaster would be for spray welding 045 wire, highly unlikely where the norm is one small wire one gas such as C25 and short circuit.

I suspect the 212 similar to the old MM210 required 10 wire and breaker to 50A which is the plug that comes on the machine.
