i have a lincoln power mig 216 i run c-25 mix gas and .045 wire solid core .

i have a small job to do and its some dirty / rusty metal . i will try my best to clean up the welding surface on old metal to new clean metal .

if i need to go flux core and gas mix for dual shield for best results is there any special stuff i need to do ? this is all 1/4" to 1/4" stuff . non structural item just sits on ground and thats it .

Self-shielded flux core wire (FCAW-S) would generally be 'better' for welding on rusty steel. The flux generally both shields the weld pool and reacts to 'crud', similar to stick welding (SMAW).

Gas shielded Flux core wire ( FCAW-G) aka dual-shield (saying "dual-shield" is kind of like saying Kleenex instead of tissue, as it refers to ONE company's specific trademarked product name) does have flux, but that is generally to alloy the weld puddle as desired/designed and all the shielding is from the shielding gas. The flux generally doesn't react to 'crud' as much as FCAW-S wires.

Rusty and can't really remove all the rust? SMAW or FCAW-S will 'tolerate' the most crud. But specific electrodes have different characteristics, so check and/or run some test welds first.

Keep in mind most of not all dual shield only comes in a 12" spool. Dual shield runs HOT and will destroy the standard mig gun in a hurry especially with c-25 gas. Co2 offers a little more cooling which can help with duty cycle. If it's just 1/4" material I would stick with 70s6 wire and c-25

I would just run flux core. If you haven't used it before, definitely give it some practice first. Keep your stick out 2-3 times what you would for mig, and pull instead of push.

even if you're going to flux core or stick weld, I would still put in effort to get the metal as clean as you reasonably can. clean metal never hurts any process :)

ER70S-6 would be preferable to E71T-1 on dirty material. Run your machine with what you have! S6 wires are well suited to what you're doing.

I really like dual shield. It has lots of advantages.

But it's not tolerant of rust. You'll end up with a lot of porosity if you can't get the metal clean.
