Welding a box end wrench back together

I was using a pipe cheater today and broke the handle off the box end on the Barcalo Buffalo 11/16 that I have been using for more than 50 years.
I am going to weld it back together, probably using a 6011 rod with my arc welder unless someone has a better idea.
I hate that it broke and a weld will be ugly but this set of Barcalo Buffalo box end wrenches means a lot to me and I want to continue using it.
Any advice?

Do you have acess to a TIG welder that might be better for something smaller and it is a purer form of welding

After you weld it, grind it smooth, and if your careful, it should look nearly perfect.
I have no idea how strong it will be though.

Post your results!

Send it back to Barcalo. They will return a new one within a week.
Of course if you do, the "Experts' will condemn it. :) :)...............thats what they do. :)

Well, he knows EXACTLY how strong it used to be.

Yes, post up some pics when you're done. In fact, how about some before and after???

Yeah, I leaned on the cheater pipe right up to the point that I thought, "If I apply more pressure, this is going to break." And it did.

This is the same wrench I used in 1961 to try to get the nuts off the studs in the heads of my grandpas 1937 Ford pickup. I used a cheater that time but stopped when the wrench bent a little. :)

Funny how you know right where that "point" is. It's like you can feel the metal stretching

pick up a replacement on ebay for pennies!

I know what you mean, I looked on ebay
I may do that but in the deepest recesses of my heart, I repair things and this tool has been mine for a long time.
What filler rod for my repair? stainless? 7018?

I broke one of my favorite shorty box wrenches.I took it back to Sears to ask about warranty and as he was ordering a new one I noticed Dad had "modified" it.I showed the clerk and was going to walk away and he said "hang on I need your mailing address".We get done and I handed the broken one to him and he said "you might as well keep it,I'm just going to throw it in the trash".I TIG'd it up and tossed it back in the drawer.

Use 70S-2 tig filler or RG60 and gas weld it.

I'm sure these guys can hook you up with the correct rod. http://www.ct-assocs.com/Crona/ I have used quite a few of their rods in similar applications. Better than the generic 6010/7018 standbys that everyone uses for mild steel. That stuff was nasty hard, difficult to grind, but not brittle. 6011 is cheese compared to some of the rods they sold us. Cannot remember numbers, but it was something like 338 or 33x or?

Also had some manganese hardfacing rod, would assume it would be good for tools.

It has history, no need in wiping it out with a warranty replacement. In mean time many companies offer that size of wrench, so no worries.

Why does this not surprise Elroy??

Guess you never pushed them real good until now. It's "weld em up time" as BB has been out of business for a good 50 years.

Maybe next time you'll chose a "non-collector" wrench to slap around if that makes any sense

Ive been on and around this forum for quite a while and I have always wondered why Elroy refers to himself in the third person?

It must have something to do with being a ***** which I understand from being around Elroy for several years is significantly different from being an imbecile.

Your assignment if you choose to accept it Mr. Phelps is to determine which is truly applicable to Elroy.

***** or Imbecile? Maybe he's just a blithering idiot??

I know it's a tough choice but I understand that Elroy has complete confidence you'll make the correct choice.

Maybe the real question here is why do ask? Are you a member too? :headscrat

Weld it up and use it. I heated up some HF angle wrenches with a torch, and bent them to mimic snap-on 4way angle wrenches. Everybody laughed. Well...9 years later, I still haven't broken one. they were at work for 7 years, have been used at home for the last two.

Either way, it's junk now, right? What's the worst that can happen, have it break again?

I watched the video on xtranormal and I can't decide which one elroy is supposed to be, I can't imagine that any halfway sane mechanic would refer to himself in the third person constantly but then I also can't picture elroy being quite as slow as the car owner. BTW, who is Mr Phelps?

And you are how old?

Mr.Phelps was the voice on the recording at the start of every Mission Impossible episode. This post will self destruct in 5 seconds!

I know how you feel.
After my grandfather died in 1988 (He was born in 1899), my uncle put all his wrenches in the old chicken house.
I found them there and took them all. Very old wrenches, a lot were S shaped with no marks except where they had been hammered on!. They have no markings for size.

I have a bunch of Ford tools with a patent date of 1917 and a bunch of Model A tools, but it would take some effort to get to them so heres some pics of old tools that were easy to photograph.
Theres many brands here and some with no brands

Of these three monkey wrenches, 2 are Diamond Calk 11" but one is much smaller than the largest one. The biggest is the one I have been using more than 50 years

I have one of the "Tee" handled 1/2" spinners like the one next to the "slightly" bent rod.
Mine is a Blackhawk. Use it all the time. Nice pics. Looks like someone got hydro-locked.

If you have the option, tig weld it with ER70s-2 filler. If you have to stick weld it, use 7018 because it has the highest tensile of the common rods.

In post 31, The 392 Hemi piston came apart at one boss after several years on the road and knocked a hole in the cylinder wall.
