I've got a really nice factory FORD chrome wheel that I'd like to use on a trailer but its got a small crack in it. I know it can be welded, my question is what can I use to help keep the discoloration of the chrome to a minimum? I know they make a putty like material to keep the heat confined within a given area, how well does it work?

I'm not sure, but PLEASE use as much ventilation as you possibly can when welding chrome. Burning chrome emits fumes that will kill you slowly if inhaled. You may or may not already know this but I felt compelled to comment just in case. We had a local metal sculptor die from heavy metal inhalation due to welding chrome bumpers for years.

Tig weld it better heat control or just take a wet rag and keep it by the area to be welded.
