spent a bit of time building a welding bench, with my limited space in my garage it had to fit under my workbench so it needed casters to manuver around but non moveable when welding or when pounding, found some left over farm pto shaft tubing to use as the lift guides and bent some steel shafting to make the lifting mechanism. table has 4 receiver hitch tubing welded in horisontly to mount tooling or strapping hooks as well as one receiver in the leg tubing for heavy pounding, plasma tray pulls out the bottom and locks into the side of the table and is level with the top (picture deceiving) the top is 3/8 plate, would of liked to find a 1/2 inch plate but couldn`t find anything used and new was too mutch $$$, still have to build a bottom shelf for steel scraps and a few more side pipes for my clamps.

I love it, that is very well thought out. Thanks for sharing, I love the caster solution. Is it hard with them being unassisted?

That system he built looks like it has a roughly 4 to 1 ratio, pushing down with 150 pounds of force would pick up 600 pounds. Since he is only doing one side at a time you could pick up a 1200 pound table that way.

Thanks guy`s for the comments! with the way the lever is built it dosen`t take mutch to lift it up, if it would be a bigger table that would need more leverage you could add a bearing on the sliding part of the lever and also add a gass assisted shock.

I am very interested in that burning table 'leaf' you have mounted on the side as I have been pondering a very similiar setup. Could you give me some more details on that? Your experience in using it? Do you have a problem with the slag bouncing back up at you? Maybe you could get the wife to snap a quick video of you cutting some steel? Nice looking table btw.

@charger891,

I just love the great idea of the table lift/wheel mechanism. Yeah you are right for bigger and heavier work bench a wheel bearing will be more appropriate for the sliding part of the lever, but how do you lock the lever handle to keep it from moving back upwards ?

Well anyway this is such a great idea and maybe I'll find a way to incorporate this contraption/mechanism into my welding table build which I am working on now, if that would be fine with you. Thanks man for sharing. :thumbup:

Gill can correct me if I am wrong, but the lever gets held because it goes over centre and locks in place. If you look at the 2nd picture you can see the little piece of square used as a stop is welded in so the round on the handle is past centre of the pivoting bolt.

Nice work, I really like it and also the fold out plasma table, well done.

yes the lever goes slightly over center and there is a piece of keyway as a stop

I haven`t used it as of yet, i did use a similar one years ago and it worked really good, the tray is also waterproof so water can also be added to the tray if you desired, the top grill is removeable to clean out slag or material.

Great looking bench!
I have been trying (off & on) to figure out a mechanism that allows for a small lift like that for a while now. The project is almost due to get started & you just saved me a bunch of time.

Thank You.
