Welding Bottle/Refill Costs

I haven't seen any threads recently on bottle and refill costs, so I thought I'd see what others are paying. I needed an argon purge bottle, so I picked up a 125cf bottle today. $229 for the bottle and $43 for the fill from the local shop. They said it would be $38 to fill a smaller 80cf argon bottle I have. I called AirGas and they wanted $549 (not a typo) for just the 125cf bottle; I didn't bother to ask what the fill price was.

Man, prices have gone out of sight! :shocking:

Especially the argon. It makes up almost 1% of the atmosphere, and it's made all the time as a by-product from liquid oxygen and nitrogen production.

Pricing is pretty consistent on the other end of the country. I was blown away by the difference between our local shop and Airgas. I know Airgas and the other big companies cater towards larger accounts, but most fabricators I know in my area go to the same local shop.

Just filled a C25 at airgas. Price was only a few $ more than Phx Welding. Last fill of C02 AG was way cheaper then PW (like half) and will swap any bottle. Not sure what PW current bottle policy is.

Hmm. I just bought a 330 CF cylinder when i got my 350p. They charged me $318 for the cylinder, and the gas was free because I bought a welder. They filled it with 357 cubic feet, or so says my receipt. That was 90/10 argon co2.

I rarely get anything other than the big 330 CF, I think my pure argon prices hover around 35 or 40 bucks. Similar price for co2 blends. Been a while since I actually looked at the bill.

I haven't bought oxygen or acetylene in a while, but I think a 300' oxygen was around 40 as well, and the 8" acetylene was maybe $50?

My salesman delivers everything to my shop. I can't remember the last time I had to actually drive a cylinder down to the store and swap it myself.

I think I'm up to 12 or 14 cylinders now, most are 330CF. I own all outright, I won't do business with a place that does the whole cylinder "lifetime" lease/who can own what size ******** game.

I deal with Purity Cylinder Gases out of Grand Rapids. Highly recommend them to anyone.

There was a thread similar to this earlier this Summer or Spring. I believe I paid less than what others had paid for my 80 cuft of Cr25. I get mine through OE Meyer.

Recently filled a 150cf of Argon for $29. My 40cf is usually around $14.

They wont sell the large 330cf tanks, only lease them. I believe its $70 a year plus fills.
This is through Arc3.

I bought my 330 argon tank at an auction 30 years ago. There is a mom and pop backyard gas supplier here who swaps it full for me with no questions asked. Same for any size tank of other gases. He will deliver for $5 extra, and I leave my tank under the carport with the cash under the valve protector.

I recently bought a '3n1' welder, Needed bottles for MIG and TIG. Checked with the three places here, Matheson, AirGas and D&D (local indy)
To buy 125 bottles the prices were 300 to 400 per bottle.
To lease, per bottle, the local indy guy was 90 bucks a year! Matheson was 77 and AirGas 55.
Clearly, I went with AirGas.
The refill on Argon was 28.
C25 was similar
I'll keep looking for a deal on owner bottles but leasing for now.
A tip for general knowledge: The neck ring will usually have the vendor's name "Airgas" or similar forged or stamped around the neck ring.
The neck ring is the first thing the store guys look at to decide whether you own the bottle or whether its a bottle that they will service/swap.
This is the important bit:
"owner bottles" have nothing stamped, the ring is blank. They call them (locally) "slick ring" bottles. They immediately know this is a private ownership bottle and there's no argument about "oh, that's a Linde or big 3 or whatever company bottle and we dont service those". If you have a slick ring, they'll know it's private and they'll service it, or swap it. Importantly, if you have a slick ring and take it in to swap, *MAKE SURE that they swap with a SLICK RING back!
If they swap out a bottle with some company name on it, then the next time, you may run into difficulty or at the least, you may be restricted on who will service it.

Also, if you see bottles at a garage sale or whatever check the ring.
Also be aware that the bottles have a date somewhere when last tested. If the date is more than ten years AND the gas place actually LOOKS for it, they may refuse to service it or may add a test fee.

They charge more per cf on the smaller bottles, get the biggest bottles you can and you'll save in the long run.

It's best to shop around for prices. Every supplier has their own rules.
Air gas bought out my little guy and Air gas prices are almost double what I was paying. I drive forty miles with a bunch of tanks at a time.

How many places generate their own acetylene?

I read on another forum due to the dangers no one does it locally anymore. In the North East there's one place in New Jersey that does it and all the welding supply houses in the region run trucks to that location to fill the tanks.

Since I read it on the internet I only half believe it. If someone here can confirm it then maybe I'll believe it 75%.

My LWS makes acetylene. Just confirmed it with my salesman.

Dr Clyde ... The Airgas around here WILL NOT sell 330 CU' tanks... lease only... and I know of no other gas supply in SE Michigan the will sell anything larger than 125... The deal with airgas is this..if you own a bottle , and go in for a fill , and don't have a cash account , or a net 30 account , they bend ya over... with sand... ask if you can do a cash account, the prices seem to get better on gas...JMO..

That's why I refuse to do business with Airgas. They're a bunch of crooks.

I agree. My first Argon bottle came from Airgas and the guy basically gave me pricing as if I had an account, which was about half of their "street rate".

My local CK won't sell anything bigger than a 40cf bottle. Anything bigger is lease-only.

They wanted $115 for a 5yr lease on a 80cf bottle, $30 for the first fill of C25. Can't remember what they said normal fills would be after that.

Has anyone dealt with Praxair?

Not much different than Airgas. Huge corporate chain. Straight up told my Uncle to his face they didn't want his business because he was just a guy in his home shop. Not worth their time. Little did they know it cost them a multi-million dollar co2 contract where he worked... He calls them "pricks-air".

Oh wow ok. Thanks!

I'll find a mom & pop welding supply close to me.

Has anyone dealt with Praxair?

I use Praxair, but my satisfaction is HIGHLY dependent on my favorite lady being at the counter. She is litteraly the only one in the whole branch that knows what the heck she's doing. Every transaction someone else handled, had some kind of error. So YMMV depending on the employees.

I went with Praxair for 2 reasons 1) they would sell outright 125cf cylinders 2) they handled Lincoln, Hypertherm and Victor. That's it really. The prices are competive or usually even cheaper to what Airgas, Techair, Earlbeck and Roberts Oxygen quoted me. Today I bought an 80CF of their mig mix for a little portable mig I just got, fill on that is $36. I know of commercial shops getting 330cf for that, but I gotta roll with what's avalible.

I left Techair, they bought out a mom and pop that my family had bought from commercially since the 60's for Praxair and I haven't found a better alternative. I'm not a high volume customer. Praxair's in house brand is normally rebranded quality stuff, I just picked up a little regulator, that is clearly a Victor, for 45 bucks less.

If you have a mom and pop that's friendly- go for them. Around here there are none left. Praxair was my next best option.
