welding cart

Built this from mostly 2" square and 1-1/4" square steel tube. My helper did all the welding (he welds better than I do ). Subbed the sandblast and powder-coating. Supports a Millermatic mig and Dynasty 200DX tig welder plus a Hypertherm 45 plasma cutter with 1 argon and 1 argon mix bottle. Welders and plasma cutter plug into a 3-receptacle box mounted on the back of the tool chest with a ~50' #6 cord. Wheels are 10" x 2-1/2" ball bearing on 3/4" axle, plus 5" casters mounted on 3/8" angle. Used a Kennedy tool chest for general storage and made up a welding rod rack from 1/16" x 1-1/4" and 1/8" x 1-1/4" aluminum angle. Fabricated the 5 cable hangars from aluminum pipe and bar.

Seeing this reminds me that I need a proper welding cart. I have a horrible wooden dolly that I drag around my shop.

You have a really sharp setup. Nice work.

The symbols on the face on my welder are tiny, though common to the breed. Getting them up at eye level like you have done would be ideal. With my cart I've had to tilt the welder. BTW, I use two short bottom tool boxes in the stand for my lathe. They are easy way to get drawers.

Yeah, my design imperative was to place the controls at eye level. The Kennedy box was expensive but worth it, in terms of quality. It was a challenge getting all three receptacles in that size box. Hard to tell from the photos, but the powder coat is a nice metallic gray; they did a super job on the sandblasting and powder coat for $80.

I know this thread is a bit old but I am currently in the process of building a welding cart as well and was hoping to gain a little insight into the receptacle box you did if you don't mind some questions.

The receptacle box is a standard metal enclosure that just fits 3 nema receptacles. Ordered all from eBay. I of course had to modify the lid.

My questions have more to do with the wiring in the box.

Are they wired in parallel or in series .. and does that matter?

As I only need two receptacles, a plasma cutter and a multifunction welder, would it be smart and/or worth it to install a switch (DPDT) between the plugs to prevent anyone from running both units at once?

Wire to 1 receptacle, then wire from the first to the second. No switch, just 2 receptacles.
