So this year in grade 12 welding we have to come up with all our own project and I'm having a hell of a time coming up with a project that will ending up being something that I can use.
I have access to mig and stick welders, oxy/acetylene as well as a plasma cutter and various other fabrication tools
You guys have any ideas?

Car trailer is good. Build a sweet steel workbench w shelves, receivers, retractable casters and any other options you want. Build a bed mount crane for a truck.

Don't know how big a project your looking for but if your looking to build something you can use that is not a huge project you might try a roll around shop stool, they are very handy. Built this one with 065 1x1 with a sheetmetal tray. Mounted the casters in those couplings they sell to join all thread. It is fairly light and durable.

hi, how about a fire pit. a multi use stand with receiver tubing so you can use it for grinder, vise ,table top storage, etc. Its the tubing that would be on the vehicle and the grinder or what ever has a plate and the 2" square tube welded to it.

A friend of mine made a roll cage for his 240Z autoX car as a welding class project.

How about portable heat. I was given this Vanguard heater that was set up for propane. It's 16K btu and can be rolled around all over the shop where needed. I use a 20lb and a 30lb tank on it. I just used some material I had laying around the shop and welded it up. :bounce:

How long does this project need to last? Something like a trailer could be done easily if you have till the end of the year.

I would build a portable vise stand like this one here. Someone on this forum built it. It is something that you you can take anywhere & you will be able to use for the rest of your life

I made a washer/dryer pedestal out of $70 of material. it's a good project because it involved a lot of measuring and cutting. I paid $300 for my class and if I bought these pedestals would have costed $500. plus, the wife is very happy.

How about a welding table? 4x4x.5 top on some angle legs with locking casters. Pimp it out with a big drawer underneath. and outlets mounted in the legs for grinders and such.

If it helps my main hobbies are playing guitar, hunting, fishing and working on vehicles

I was kinda hoping I would to of had a truck by now because that would of gave me so many more options(brush guard, roll bar, toolbox ect.)

Materials arent really in issue, students have to pay for materials, but if it a project that I think is worth it I'll shell out the cash
