Welding flash in public places?

I'm 60' from the street in my garage. I sure hope no one comes in the driveway when I am welding (getting close enough to hurt themselves), but that is their problem if they do.

I was in New York over the summer - in Times Square there are portions of the roadway that are just big steel plates - I assume so they don't need to dig up the road to access the utilities underneath.

They had a welding crew out there one day and all the protection they had was a couple of guys holding a blanket in front of the welder. This blocked the arc from the front, but it was still visible from the sides and back. However, if you were close enough for it to be a danger, the blanket would have done enough.

In other words, if you're a good distance away, I don't think it really matters.

I wouldn't worry about it. In this day and age, most people have their nose buried in their cell phone and are oblivous to their surroundings.
