I was looking at welding fume filter but the cost is off putting. So I was thinking of making one from a bit of this and a bit of that. The first question is it better to push air through or pull it through the filters? As for the filter system was to go with a large range filter that would stop the splatter if it got to that far, then 3 standard pleated filters, then followed by a HEPA filter. If any one has made one of these or seen one all it would be helpful. The thing I was going to use to move air is a small shop dust collector.

^^^Some very dangerous advice in that thread. Personally, for the small shop Id suggest a good exhaust system venting outside with a hose setup at the welding table. If youre going to get into working with stainless, coatings, or other toxic materials, a professional fume extractor and respirator should be considered a requirement. Realistically, professional fume extractors arent hugely expensive used, only a few hundred bucks and will prevent you from a world of hurt.
