No kidding.

I’ve heard of some odd stuff…

I knew an industrial user that had a private pool of bottles for laser cutting, all marked with their name. No one was polishing them, they had concerns about consistency. They tuned their process and were working right at the limits of the tolerance and surfac finsh possible wioth their equipment, and different gas mixes changed how it cut. having a bunch of bottles meant they got exactly what they wanted, instead of standard mix, and it all got filled at the same time, so the bottle to bottle consistency was good.

That thing cost me over $400 with shipping. There's no way in hell I'm ever going to turn it in for scratched up beat up tank.

See what I wrote in post #15: You didn't "buy a tank"...you contributed to a tank to a cabal. The $400 was just the ante into the game.

Sure, no argument. I am not advocating one way or the other. Just seems odd that people can't understand the concept.
We understand the concept, we just find it illogical and crazy and anyone that has delt with welding shops and gas bottles in any significant amount would. Literally no shop except one in my area fills their cylinders on site. And the one that does only does argon, and since it might take a day or two to get the cylinder on a fill nozzle and then a few hours to fill it, your getting an exchange.

Now if one really cares about appearances, the tank condom is more logical although is still slightly neurotic

Call around and see who has the best price. For me AWG was the cheapest for gas. They don't care what tank shows up, they will exchange it so I've ended up with tanks over the years and just swapped them for what I wanted. For the pretty paint guys they also consistently have freshly painted tanks.

FWIW, my local shop *WILL* fill (rather than swap) an owner's tank....but they won't do it on the spot. You have to return 2-3 days later.

I bought my tank at home,
exchange convenience is what I like for personal use.

At work we have a service, all rented tanks.

The vendor I use, keeps their tanks looking decent.
