So I’m tig welding a small tube to a cap. I seem to remember seeing some kind of a putty/clay type of material that would slow or absorb heat from around an area being welded. Was it a dream or does such a product exist?

Never heard of clay/putty... doesn't sound like it would be a good conductivity with metal 🤷.

I have heard of using copper plates for that purpose, however. Never had a need to do that myself, but I'm using using regular angle, HSS shapes, etc in common thicknesses using FCAW.
