Welding helmet issue

I have a Jackson EQC auto darkening welding helmet that really has not been used much. I went to use it and it turns on when I push the button but as soon as I let go it shuts off. If I hold the button it works fine. I love the helmet and would like to know if anyone knows how I might fix it. It does have brand new batteries. If it can not be fix I will need a newone. I really do not weld much anymore so I do not want to spend alot on one. Any good one that HomeDepot sell on line? I have store credit.
Thanks for any help

My Miller is very picky about batteries. I need to use the Panasonic button cells - energizer doesn’t work. Maybe something like that is the issue.

Sounds like maybe a hardware button issue, have you blasted air into it? I would also attempt to open and diagnose any corrosion or debris.

Cobbler is on the right track, new lens is cheapest way. Might be able to upgrade as well?

Energizer are the only batteries I can get to work in my Miller elite. The energizer batteries are a little bit thicker.

This may sound crazy, but a fair amount of these helmets contain a solar battery system as well. Sit your helmet out in the sun for a few hours. You just might get a surprise.

Mine has Duracell's AAA in it now. I will try another brand and also try the other suggestions everyone has made. Mine does not have sola.

I've had my miller elite since 2005 and it's still on the orginal battery. Have run hundreds of pounds of wire with it.

Only recently changed to another helmet after my pup chewed apart the headband and the replacement one from Miller *****.

On an old Jackson helmet that I have, the model number is in the battery compartment of the auto darkening filter. You have to remove the batteries to see it.

The # in the battery compartments is 80jv50. I did a google search and I have found nothing at all for this helmet. I know I had the manual but can not find it since I moved.

The model # didn't help me much either, but I knew where to find it.
There is a coil spring for the negative contact of the battery, and that is usually what corrodes. Sometimes you can clean the contact by fitting a cut-down pencil in the battery compartment with the eraser end pressing against the spring. If you twist it around, it might be enough to clean off any corrosion. (An old dowel with a piece of fine sandpaper attached might work as well.) I've fixed an old one by splitting the case and replacing an old spring that broke, but the whole thing was near the end of its life and it was time to get a new one.
I think that Jackson (and most other people) consider these to be disposable items. It helps to remove the batteries if you're using it infrequently.

Well was playing with it and I think I figured out the problem . The on button works fine but the off button feel like it is stuck. The plastic moves but I do not feel the click like the on does. If it is stuck that would make sense why once I let go of the on button it turns right off. Can these be open up to maybe clean the switch? maybe dirty.

it's probably a push button switch that's mounted to a board. easily replaced if so , if it can't be cleaned.
some careful prodding should let you in to the guts . screws can be hidden behind labels and stuff. you can often find them by rubbing on the labels and looking for small depressions that form . hopefully it's not glued together

Yes mine looks to be glued. My eyes will not be that good for the fine circuit board sobering to replace the switch. I will have to ask a buddy who ight be able to do it. It ois worth a try other wize I will need a new helmet.

The one that I had snaps together, but it's very easy to break the plastic tabs. The button is make of a rubber material with a carbon coating at the bottom that presses against the circuit board. Similar to a TV remote if you've ever taken one apart to fix.
I'd try a very small drop of silicone oil on the button (something like Super Lube).

No experience. But looks standard issue lens and headwear biting Optrels look.

In my experience 90% of these new brands/generic helmets are a good buy around <$100

Really should look for features that you want/need. After that name, warranty, parts, etc... play a small factor with these brands.

Features I look for: headgear comfort, interface control, grind mode, weight, etc...

Check out USAweld for some good import helmets as well. But if HF can make a safe helmet for $30, these are just a nicer versions.
