Welding outside - 50 amp breaker question

Hello,

During electrical rough-in we ran 6 gauge wire through the back wall of the new workshop to eventually be able to weld outside or power a compressor. (I will probably build a compressor shed on the back of the building)

I didn't get a chance to talk to the electricians and they are coming this week to finish up. I know the outside plug should be in a weatherproof housing. Should it also be GFCI?

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Only 15 & 20A 120V straight blade receptacles require GFCI protection.

I usually like the Midwest style power outlets for stuff like this

I think a U051 is the one with a 6-50P welder outlet.

No GFCI. Your going to need the correct weatherproof cover/enclosure. Those are expensive! Likely over $100 in materials for the receptacle and enclosure. You may want to consider putting a blank plate over the box for now until you actually have something you want/need to use it for. Would **** to get the wrong style receptacle and have to spend another $100+ for something different later.

The Midwest WP outlet shown by Bert is not that expensive and would be well suited for a welder just not a larger compressor due to horsepower limitations.

For 6GA wires/circuits (50/60A) I like using these exterior rated RV pedestals - they include 3 breakers and outlets: 50A @ 220V, 30A @ 120V, 20A @120V (GFCI). They're $130. Amazon: Siemens TL137US Talon
