Yes it can. I do it all the time. Use 309 rod.

care needs to be taken when working with cast iron. It likes to crack after it is welded. It can be done, you just have to know what you are doing, pre and post heating and cool down etc. Brazing would probably be easier

Jeepers do it all the time when welding to their diff housings. So yeah, it's not all that common but can definitely be done.

I'm thinking a jeep diff housing is cast STEEL not iron. cast steel welds ok

That all depends on the housing you're using. Some are cast steel but many are cast iron too. Most offload enthusiasts ditch the jeep differentials early in their builds for bigger, stronger axles.

If it has to be brazed I must be dreaming when I weld it. And no I'm right handed. I welded it upside down at an angle to get best results. I'll be welding stainless to cast iron and stainless to mild steel in a few days an another manifold and will post that up.

Sounds like the iron had absorbed some oil or another chemical as its famous for doing and burped on you.

Realistically, its a pretty simple process if done correctly - I order it and see it done every single day, and have also done quite a bit of it myself. Ferrous to ferrous, no biggie.

Shift,
Right handed, really. Me too, I'd go CC with that every time, on the bench/table or overhead unless there was an obstruction that forced me to do otherwise. Everybody's got there own way, nice work.

Most diffs that I used to work with in the offroad industry were cast iron. I forgot what the TIG rod I used, but I think is was specifically for dissimilar metals. It might have been the 309 rod that shiftdrift mentioned.

It can be welded but if you have to ask then you probably shouldn't. Then again if it's for some kind of backyard project where nobody gets hurt in the event of a failure give it a try.

Thanks for the replies.

I am not a welder and DNHAFC, but have decided to use steel pipe for strength, as bracket will absorb a lot of sheer and resistance.

If I ever spout off regarding a welding question (I won't), just tell me to STFU. I work on boats, but have a welder I use for such.

all you guys saying you can weld cast iron, you are most likely welding CAST STEEL!!!!! even if you got it to weld, it would just break off!
