My dad has done tons of welding in his shop over the last 10+ years and the epoxy coated floor has stood up well. Has some burn marks, but I can't believe how well it has stood up to the rigors of welding and cutting with a torch.

I have the same coating on my shop floor but don't have a welder (wish I could afford one). I think it is either Dupont or Rustoleum- can't remember. We got the kits from Lowe's.

Keep in mind that raw concrete has a hard time with weld slag and weld splatter.
Cold floor, hot slag can equal a "POP".

Epoxy will mark, tiles will too.

We recommend most folks to use an acrylic sealer or densifier vs. anything expensive and easily marked.

I was in a shop the other day and the welding fab area was a steel floor. 4x8' sheets of I'm guessing 1/4" thick. Looked to be a neat setup.

I'm guessing that was in reference to PVC tiles.
An unglazed porcelain tile would probably only show a bit of soot.

I have epoxy on my floor and I throw a 3x5 of 1/4 inch cement backer board in front of my bench to prevent too many more of the little black burn specks when I'm welding.

I'm really interested to see what holds up. I'm not doing my garage floor soon, but I like to plan ahead. I've been thinking of doing porcelain tile all along, but also thought about stained concrete. Thing with stained concrete is I'd have to have the floor repoured to fix that look since it's uneven/cracked in some spots. Plus not sure on the cost of tile vs new concrete.

I do heavy amounts of welding and cutting metal.
