welding rod Filler material

I just got a set of stamped drawings from a structural engineer for a project Im doing.
Under the heading of "weld" is a topic" Weld Filler material grade" 1100
then weld size 3/16".
What is 1100?
I told the engineer I was going to use 1/8" 7018 rod but have no idea if this and 1100 are the same?

well I hope not,that process doesnt look so portable and the largest Mig I have is a 180c
Welding .20 thick to 7 gauge with a wire thats .045 doesnt look doable

I haven't gotten too much into weld specs lately, but each time I do its a pain in the ***

I got a reply back
1100 is their term for 11ksi
a 7018 rod is 70ksi
Looks like any mild steel electrode will work as 1100 is pretty low and it still passed their test.
Then further confusion set in when I said 7018 X 1/8",which they took as an 1/8" bead not an 1/8" diameter.
I suggested 1/8" diameter because 7 gauge could blow thru using 3/16",due to the heat it needs.
I may experiment with a flux core(did I mention I hate flux core but this is unsheltered outside).

I would have serious doubts about anyone specifying such a low weld strength. Could be a matter if "it just doesn't matter" to a more extreme "I really don't care" but an odd way to spec it. To some of the earlier comments: 3/16 is the weld bead spec, not the filler rod diameter.

I guess more confusion is in this still
I mentioned using a 7018 rod of 1/8" diameter,too much heat when a larger diameter is used.
Yes 3/16" they spec is the weld bead.
And what they are saying is that a low grade filler material(as long as its a full penetration weld whos material is above 11ksi will work in their testing.)
I wouldnt call that a "I really dont care".

The original spec was using a 5/16"SS bolt and L bracket,which Im replacing with a welded tab.

Agree that it could have been clearer but I now have something that the inspector can sink his teeth into.
And a lot better than 110,000
:p

3/16" fillet weld, minimum required weld filler ultimate Shear strength is 7.5 ksi.

7018 welding rods meet that. Welding rod diameter doesn't really matter on the weld strength calculation, you can use 3/16" or 1/8" or 5/32" 7018 rods to make a 3/16" fillet weld.

Although that page has the engineering calculations, it is NOT the way to call out a weld on a fabrication drawing.

You're in Florida, and this is important enough that you have a structural engineer stamping a plan/drawing and an inspector (building inspector or welding inspector?) involved.

AWS D1.1 is the usual structural steel welding code. Hopefully you haven't been backed into a corner by building code requirements that the welding has to meet D1.1 requirements, because then you would have to get certified to D1.1 and everything would have to be inspected (before, during, and after) by a CWI.

And a 3/16" fillet weld does not meet the minimum allowable structural steel fillet weld size in D1.1. The minimum allowable fillet weld size in D1.1 is generally a 1/4" fillet weld.

And before using an FCAW-S wire electrode, double check that said wire electrode meets all of the requirements for not just Shear and tensile strength but also possible CVN building code weld requirements. Most FCAW-S Wires that can be used with a 180 amp class small Welder do NOT meet any CVN requirements.

7018 rods do have CVN properties and can meet most structural steel welding code requirements.

Plans are in for review right now.
If I get a lot of gaff on the welding
I ll go to plan b which has already been approved
angle bracket and a 5/16" SS bolt.
We both know which one will be stronger

Almost sounds like an engineer isn't really doing engineer stuff. But I'm neither an engineer or a real welder.
