Welding Table Build (Novice)

Hello everyone,

I just got my first welder last week, its a Millermatic 211 autoset mig welder. I have purchased a 155 CF cylinder with 75A 25CO2 gas. I had never welded before and have been watching as many videos as possible and browsing the forums to get ideas.

Im trying to build a welding table, I have limited resources/funds (college student) so its kinda being pieced together. It's not as elaborate and definitely not as heavy duty as many of you guy's tables but space is limited in my situation.

I'll upload what i've done so far and a very crude drawing of what i planned on. If any of you could add some input, it would be appreciated.

I have 4 of the 7 in wheels (52 lbs load per) that i plan on using, i realize it wont turn like a (castor) would but i will have to wheel this thing out into the gravel each time i use it (thought the tires would work better). I'm hoping to frame the two shelves (bottom and middle pics) to the top piece (top pic) using the 1 1/4 in square tubing.

I currently have 20' of 1 1/4 inch square tubing and 20' of 1x1" square tubing.
Any recommendations on how i should piece these three pieces together with the materials at hand? Also, i would like to mount a receiver hitch for the vise like many of you have done, how would you go about mounting that?

The crude drawing (hopefully attached) has all the dimensions of my shelves. I realize the horizontal lengths arent all exactly the same, apparently i screwed up when i welded them together:lol_hitti Thanks for any help you can offer

After previewing my post, my drawing (weldtabledrawing) file is in incredibly small font, cant seem to fix it. Sorry. You might still be able to see what i'm getting at.

The top shelf is 60 x 30.5 of 1/4 in steel.
Middle shelf is 60 x 22 of 1/4 in stainless.
Bottom shelf is 60 x 26 of 1/2 in stainless.

I didn't pick the odd ball sizes, that's what they came in from the recycling yard. I'm just trying to make them work.

first practice on scrap steel. and learn to listen to the sound your welder makes. when it sounds like bacon frying in a pan it is set correctly.

hope this helps?

You're right, your attachment is small and hard to read. From what I can tell, it looks good in design. Don't make you plans in stone just yet. While you are building it, stop and visualize what it wouold be like to work at/on it. You may find you want to make changes as you go. Tack everything together before completely welding it.

Something I will suggest is to weld a tab (or bolt) to the underside of the welding top. It'll give you a place for the ground if you are ever laying something large out on top.

Great start To a good looking table. Have fun with it, if you are new to welding make sure the table is structurally sound before really beating on it. I would push pull and twist it to make sure your welds will hold.

Great job! looking forward to seeing it come together.

Since you'll be using that on gravel, I'd suggest including at least 3 adjustable leveling feet.

Also, check out "ChuckE2009" on YouTube.

Thanks everyone for the advice, much appreciated.

I will definitely be welding a ground tab somewhere on the bottom of the table. Not sure if I have a HF in the area but if i do i will check out some receiver hitch tubing.

Adjustment levelers is a good idea, i will definitely try and get some of those on it.

I did a little bit more today, it's slowly looking like a table. Thanks for all the help. I'll add some pics in case anyone's interested.

Tomorrow i'm hoping to get some side supports, frame in the middle shelf and frame the top together for the top shelf to mount too using some 1in square tubing. Than i get to spend half a day grinding the top smooth and another day painting. Cant wait till this thing is done, tired of working on the ground.

Looks good, great start. If you don't have a 2' framing square it would be a good investment. Sometimes it works better then levels and all levels don't read the same.
