I'm gathering material for a welding table I want/need to build. Have a question about the base for the top I'm hoping others can help with from exeperance.

I'm using 2x4 rectangle tubing with .25 wall. Should I bring the tubing right to the endge of the top or leave an overhang? If leaving an overhang, what is a good dimension to leave? 1 inch around? 2?

Top is a 3'6" x 4'6" .250 thick.

Leave an overhang of 3" minimum, much easier for clamping. Very nice table Draginlow.

Agreed.

If you don't already have the material, it might make more sense to use lighter pieces for the base and thicker steel for the top. 2x4x1/4 is kind of crazy overkill -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Agreed.

I have most of the material, and for the price of FREE.

The top was giving to me, I just had to go pick it up with my truck, they even loaded it for me. Figure I can always cut the top off and get a thicker piece down the road if I beat this one up too much.

The rectangle tubing was sitting under our Fadal mill for who knows how long. We found it when we got rid of the Fadal for our new Mazak mill. I got the OK to take it home.

Only thing I need to buy is the legs (thinking 3x3x3/16 wall) and casters.

I'd go with atleast 3" (like mine). Sometimes I wish I had set it back justtt a little further to have the ability to set my clamps even further

I used 4x4 sq tube for the legs w/ 4x4 angle for braces between the legs. I put the legs flush to the edge and put the angle w/ the vertical section toward the middle of the table. Clear as mud? Basically I have a 4" overhang w/ plenty of support provided by the angle.

I set my overhang at 3" and I think that is just right. So far I have not needed any more than that.

3'x5' with 1/2" top, 2"x2"x3/16" framing
