If you're mainly looking to do sheet metal work on something that age, forget the flux core. When I do patch work on restorations I do a series of tack welds spaced across the panel and let the panel cool between each run.

doing patch panels with flux core wire is possible, but is truly an exercise in frustration.

i rarely do sheetmetal work that needs to be finished, (or look nice) so i do run flux core on my s-10 blazer.
sheetmetal work for others i'll switch to .023 solid wire and gas
