i cant say ive ever payed attention to the prices. ive been using harbor freight wire because i thought it was cheaper than everything else, but now looking at prices, name brand wire isnt really anymore. not sure if one has come down or the other has dropped in price.

looking at .030 mig wire. need a new roll, and the lincoln L 56 at home depot is only 38 bucks for a 12# spool. any preference for general steel welding at home?
miller 130 machine.

I've been ordering HTP wire off eBay, and have been very satisfied. I believe you can get an 11lb roll of .030 solid wire for less than $30 shipped, probably cheaper than going to HF.

The Lincoln L56 is good wire. I've heard mixed reviews on HTP.

I'm also guilty of using the HTP in my MIGs. It's China but has always been fine for general fabrication that I do.

For some reason they do weird weights, like a 30lb spool instead of 33. So if you search eBay and only search for 33# (as I used to) it won't come up. You can also just order from them directly, they do free shipping on just about everything.

i was straightening up shop and found a roll of wire labeled E71T-GS there are some numbers after it but cant make it out. label is pretty worn. i searched and found this on millers site.

For general purpose mild steel applications, a flux-cored wire with the designation E71T-11 or E71T-GS can be used in any position, is available in a wide range of sizes and provides excellent welding characteristics for both thin and thicker material. Hobart Brothers offers both of these wires under the names Fabshield 21B (E71T-11) and Fabshield 23 (E71T-GS).
its a brand new roll, but appears to be flux core? no good for me. need solid.

lincoln L56 work well. the one time i bought 10lb spool of another name brand in a pinch after running the machine hard i actually thought my mig was dying the arc was so weak and erratic. tried different tips etc. nothing worked except going back to L56. i have no idea why theres such a difference but i stick with what works.

I have a couple of spools of flux core as well. I keep them around for that day when I'm out of gas and need to finish up.

That wire is Lincoln's premium wire and is designed for robots and automated weld cells where smooth, uninterrupted feed is a must. It has extra alloying elements in it to make it feed and wet out nicer. Silicon primarily I think, but I'm not sure. Certainly pay for the extra elements. It costs 20 bucks more than their SureArc, the next step down wire in the 44lb. spools.

I bought a 33# spool of SureArc thinking it was L56. Before returning it I asked over at Welding Web, and several people said they liked it better than the L56.
