There are those who steal for Sport
If they see it loose they will take it because they think they can get away with it. I have known kids to steal bags of dog poop just because they were bored or drunk.

Well built? How about the Toughbuilt laptop bags? These are certainly well-constructed. They come in different sizes.

I fixed the girls up with small tool kits for college. No power tools; just one of those 6-way screwdrivers, small hammer, pliers, scissors, tape measure, box cutter, cheap flashlight, etc. No fancy bag, just a cardboard box.
They weren't stolen. Most of them were borrowed by other students who never returned them or in turn lent them out to others.
I knew they would gradually disappear.
This is why we can't have nice stuff and have to buy Harbor Freight.

Best thing to tell him is NOT to lend them out.

A Bucket Boss bag, it has a reinforced floor that prevents sagging and protects the contents if dropped or put down hard, you won't get that from a back pack, duffle or gym bag.

If you are keeping the bag in the car put it in the trunk by the spare tire second is under a BACKSEAT..Does not matter if someone breaks into your car they are going to go through every bag in the there. I deal with auto burglaries daily, some only look in consoles, other dig deeper. Best deterrent I've found is keep nothing of value in there, get an alarm and lock the doors, surprisingly many people never lock the doors

I’m on the same wavelength as DAustin. He has given you a few options. Go down your basement and find an old ratty back pack or something similar that was your son’s years ago and use any one you find. In our DD I use an old Woods canvas tent bag that once held a tent my Grandpa owned. That bag is probably about as old as I am. 😁

What is he driving? Is there room to hide everything, or at least the inflator, with the spare tire? Even if he keeps the batteries in his room or travel bag, there’s less chance someone will take them if there is no tool attached.
And get him the small M12 USB power adaptor. He is very likely to use that regularly and it will keep the batteries healthy.
