Some people buy tools for "What If" ,
Just in case they make a nut that odd size, I will have a wrench for it.

I guess that is like buying a Calendar with the 2nd Tuesday of next week listed ; Just in case one happens to be declared.

You’d want to have a 39mm socket?
Only if I had the 38! :D
On a serious note, yes. I work on tons of different stuff, rust can make some "custom" sizes, big sockets are handy in presses, etc. I am also the kind who would rather have and not need, than need and not have.
One place I could see skipping stuff, is for road boxes...that I I can go along with!

Only if it's a 12-point... Toyota (and maybe others?) use 12-point 39mm for the axle nut.

Otherwise, I don't seek out odd sizes. In fact, sometimes I piece together a set and save money by not buying those odd sizes.
But then again, if they're included, it won't factor into buying the set as there are other variables far more important (such as price, COO, etc.).

BMW uses it. Had to get one for it. Like most here I never know where I'm heading on some things. So, I would rather have a set that covers the range. Individual sockets cost time and money. Hate stopping for a tool not ready and then locating it. I live in the boonies and it can be a half day to obtain said socket.
As stated earlier, better to have and not need. Then to need and not have.
