but it was fun to clean it up and paint it. 1-1/2" jaws, opens to 2". Worth what I paid for it... to me at least! It was good practice, untl someone around here sells a real vise.

you are correct. It is marked, "Victory Jersey 741," made by Stanley in the USA.

Does yours have the S.W. logo in a heart shape? (Stanley Works)

I have a 765 that is virtually identical to yours (Has the S.W Logo so is circa 1920 - 34), and my daughter uses a much later 745 for jewelry making (Has Stanley cast into the slide both sides).

here's a picture of the top of the slide. This appears to be a more recent model. No heart shapes anywhere that I see.

Wow, yours (I think) is older than mine and predates the current (Later) "Stanley Tool Co.

From Wikipeadia:

The company was created by the 1920 merger of Stanley's Bolt Manufactory, founded by Frederick Trent Stanley in 1843, and the Stanley Rule and Level Company,[5] founded by Frederick's cousin, Henry Stanley, in 1857.

So I'm guessing yours was made between 1908 (Pat. date) and 1920! Nice find! Did you have any "before" pics? was their only one coat of paint? if so, color?

there appeared to be 2 layers of paint- a dull red color under a light green color. If you look closely at the picture, below the anvil, in red, you can see where there has been a weld repair of some kind, so as far as value, its probably worth what I paid for it- $3. Without the repair, I have seen them for around $200! I like mine as-is. It is solid and works great, and cost almost nothing.

Was the weld brassy colored when stripped? Often the old timers brazed broken CI.

A shame it was broken, but its still a nice find.

the weld was silver in color. What are these vises made of? Cast iron, steel, little of both?

no before pics...unless I strip the red paint off. It looked pretty good bare...except for the welding rod.

I found a place to put it...I made an extension for the top of my new (used) roller cabinet, and it seems to fit just fine. I wouldn't mind finding a small bench vise to mount directly to the top, though...

Looks good! You might want to add the optional mounting screws too. (Yours did come with screw holes on the top flange, yes?)

yes, it has two mounting holes. When I first saw the vise, I was thinking of hacking off the clamp-on portion, and making it into a mini-bench vise. I used 3/4" ply for the cabinet top, so I can t-nut the vise to it. Since the vise has a weld repair, I am not concerned about destroying its value. Would you agree?

The vise inside a vise reminds me of a poster I once saw.

"There's no such thing as a free lunch" was the caption, and it showed a fish about to get eaten by a bigger fish about to get eaten by another bigger fish about to get eaten by still yet another bigger fish.

I'd do the T nuts and leave the clamp (cinched tight also). That way you can temp mount it elsewhere if needed . I just never trust the clamp alone for when I need to twist on something in the vise, as the clamp won't hold that sort of force. Originally I'm sure just ordinary pan head wood screws were used, but the T nuts are much better.

Ya, thats why I moved the baby vise to its own, separate corner. Hahahahaha.

I think you need another even bigger vise to set the first two in.

Like this?

My first choice for a stack of vises would be booze, women, and some third thing I haven't settled on yet.

But those would be my second choice.
