My dad has a very nice 60 by 120 with 18 ft ceilings for doing work on our farm equipment. Also i use it to make some side money too. We have been trying to find 2 or 3 good metal work benches that are strong enough to have a 6 inch vise mounted to them. Where would you recommend getting something like this? It would be nice to have them with casters on them to make them mobile because sometimes we have 2 or 3 machines ripped apart in there at a time

I had several of these built for my shop. THey will hold a vise (and anything else for that matter).

In fact, if you are close, I am re configuring my shop and selling this one :)

6 inch vise on a bench that's on casters is going to be only as strong as those casters.

Maybe a smaller vise for mobility and a bigger vise on a stationary bench if you often have to wail on things.

I cant understand the idea of a vise on a stand. I use my vise HARD, and dont have room or time for several vises. I want mine a permanent fixture. whether threading pipe or really leaning into it while notching tube, the vise CANNOT move.

We already have a 5 inch vise on a homemade bench on casters. The casters are rated for 1000 lbs each. Plenty of overkill. The bench was in my dads old shop before and we have no idea where it came from.

If you work on heavy equipment and have the room, find some heavy scrap plates and weld up a fab table. You gotta have an old stick welder laying around or know someone that does.

I went to go buy a machine locally and the guy was also selling a 4'x8' table 1" thick with 4"x4" legs for $150.

03 arent a problem either if you have the knowledge to fix them. Plus it was a real good deal.

We have a stick mig and tig. Just no time to make them. I have a full time job. My dad and brother do to. Also farm about 900 acres of row crop. Custom haul grain and operate a skid loader service. Help repair tile lines and manage to pump work out of the home shop for some money.

TS: these old government steel benches can hold a 6 inch vise if you need them too and you can put some nice locking casters on them.

or take a look at this vise and grinder stand thread and see if you might see something else you can make or have made if you are too busy. if you are busy making money then pay somebody to build you a nice bench or two if you can't find one.

Mine are .120 thickness. Had difficulty locating a shop with a brake big enought to bend that length of .120. Its designed to fit over 1.5" material. I used partical board because it is true to size and is better suited to localized heat. It really doesnt make any difference what you use though.

Lonestarlando, it funny you posted that tennsco table. Over the weekend i purchased a NOS Lot of military shop tools. Among the many unopened crates of 80's era military shop equipment was one containing a table identical to the tennsco you just posted.

That's what I would highly recommend. A bench in a big shop that's used for big equipment isn't made out of 12ga in my opinion. I have 2 steel-top benches, 5/8" thick and 1" thick.

It depends heavily on its use. I dont need a 2" thick steel plate table to rebuild hydraulic cylinders. I want something strong, thats easily rolled around.

I have been using the Tennsco brand for about 40 years I have 3 of them. I would keep your eyes open for them on craigslist I just saw one that I don't need but almost went for for 120 with a drawer and lower shelf and back panel. decent deal I think sometimes cheaper. Put a caster jack set up on the end opposite the vise and none under the vise end. You can also add plywood under the steel top for a different feel too. Very versatile I think.
