I have a question. My well is powered from a panel located in the garage. I would like to be able to power it from a generator when the power goes out. In lieu of a transfer switch could I install a 220 receptacle on the wall and a 15' or so cord. With a plug connected to the the well. When I have power the cord would be rolled up and plunged into the walk. When power is out I could unplug it from the wall and connect to the generator out side. Is this safe and okay?

With close to the same amount of work and maybe a little bit more cost, you could power the whole house with a proper interlock kit as mentioned above. You need to buy an interlock kit, a power inlet, and a generator whip (cord). Doing the well alone would be about 20% to 30% of the cost of doing the whole house...


Nothing like being able to use the microwave or watch your favorite show while the whole neighborhood is still without power...or even being able to turn on and off lights when walking from room to room. You won't regret either decision.

Third on an interlock. Most breaker panel manufacturers also sell them.

I just installed one last month. They're ridiculously expensive for what they are... $100 for 25¢ worth of plastic and screws. But they're still cheaper than a transfer switch and you're not limited to a few circuits.

No problem with a cord and plug setup. No different than how I have my air compressor set up. 240V 20A run with a twist lock plug on the compressor and matching socket.
