I'm driving a gear onto a shaft with probably a 5 thou press fit.

My reliable 3lb hammer wasn't doing it. So I went to Ace to see if a 6 was there. That hickory handle broke.

Now I have a sledge borrowed from a neighbor.

Might have to do some disassembly and find a way to use the 20t press.

A 500 degree (Fahrenheit) thermal difference, assuming a thickness of 1.5" will give you 0.005" clearance. At that point you could press it on my hand!

Excuse my ignorance, but is this how it's done? If I were to be wailing a gear onto a shaft with a BFH, I'd question whether I was doing the right thing and basically be waiting for something to break.

This is a legitimate question; I really don't know if this is the method you are to use for this job.

I agree, typically isn't a press fit somewhat precise? By that I mean you need to be precise, pushed evenly on etc etc.

I would try the heat method

The right tool is a bolt threaded into the end of the shaft, which pushes down on a sleeve. I've done that. It works for stock clearances. This one is tighter. Hammering it on isn't an issue in this case either.


Also, I'm not sure if 500F would mess with the heat treat of the gear.

Any good 1-piece will do you just fine.. provided this isn't a job strictly for a decent press.
