Hello guys! After a year of searching and waiting my fiancé and I finally closed on a house Wednesday October 17th it came with an attached 28x32 garage. It's a dream come true for me. I've been a member of this site for a while now and I have been waiting to start my own thread in this section! I called it the starter garage because I'm only 23 and have limited tools and funds. I will be getting married here in April as well so funds are even tighter. None the less I would like to show my progress to everyone! I hope you guys are interested. I will post as much as I can and as many pics as well. So here goes.

On the right side of the panel is a door that leads to the back yard. To the rear of my jeep are two doors. One leads to the basement and the other to the driveway. It's a nice place and looks bigger in person. There is also a sink behind my jeep. All the stuff on the work bench is just there as we are still moving in. Tonight I went to the house and fixed some outlets. Also took measurements for the 220 line I will be running to the dryer.

I would like to ask for some advice to a water drainage problem in the garage. The slab extends from the garage doors by about 3 and a half feet. On the roof there is a gutter. The slab was graded wrong and water is running back under the doors and into the garage. The choices that I think I have are: 1 install a track drain or 2 cut the slab off and get it out. Here's the pics! I would love any advice you could give me!

Looks well insulated and a great place to start, congrats! I went with a track drain at my place, but that's because it was my only choice. My 1918 built house has an old Model-T garage that sits at basement level, with a one story slope going from ground level down to the base of the garage door. There was a single 8 x 8 square drain opening in the center, but when it rained heavy, the water on either side of the opening made its way into the garage. Was a lot of work I haven't done a lot of cement work in the past and I'm pleased with how the drain turned out.

I think I would cut the apron of all the way around to the man door. It is relatively quick and cheap solution. Run downspouts as far from the foundation as is reasonable.

You will eventually get around to having the area re-graded and paved, but that can wait several years.

I was talking to a few guys at work about the apron of the garage and they brought up something I didn't think of. They suggested that the garage was built smaller then intended and the footer extends to the end of the apron. I will did around tonight and see what I find.

Other then that no more progress has been made in my garage. Mostly because it is filled with boxes from us moving. We unpacked all this weekend.

On Sunday we had the pleasure of welcoming a new family member.

Her name is Abby! She is a 2 year old shepherd mix. We adopted her from the somerset county humane society. She is the best dog. Listens well, knows how to sit, shake, speak and lay down. She doesn't bark or become mean to new people. My fiancé and I are looking forward to giving her the forever home that she deserves. She will be my garage dog for many years!

I've been busy a lot lately. So I haven't been able to spend as much time in my garage as I would like too. Much of that time has been fixing the stuff in the house the old home owner did half ***. But here is some progress.

I got a few new things including a toolbox that I got from a friend. I traded him a bunch of stickers from various brands most were extras i got. and a pair of nws side cutters. I thought it was a great trade!

My fiancé also brought me a nice display they use at the store she works at they got new ones so I got one of the old ones. It's in great shape and has slots so I can put hooks and these neat shelves she brought me into it. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358640825.235745.jpg
On the far right of the first pic is a water bed frame repurposed into storage. It's not bolted together yet but once it is it will find a home on the other side of the garage.

I also had my garage door motor mounts break. The old owner had it supported my small metal straps. And he greased the entirety of both door tracks. That coupled with the cold weather made the door get stuck and trash the old mounts. It also bent the garage door pieces. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358641206.567864.jpg
I can't believe how much they want for one single panel. I will probably wait until summer and buy a whole new door.

I also mounted my small vise until I get a bigger one this will have to do.

I made use of the old garage door straps as well. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358641364.285598.jpg

I have a ton more work to do out there. I bought two old bench grinders that are going to get a complete make over. And I will be posting more soon. Keep me motivated fellas!

Did some work yesterday. Got some more OSB put up. And will soon be making some peg board. HD was having a sale on peg board 6 bucks a sheet so I got two for later use. Next project is to finish more interior walls. Not sure how much more cash I can put into this at the moment seeing as my wedding is only 2 months away. But, slow and steady wins the race.

I removed the huge corner shelf the old owner put up. It was in the corner of the second pic. It was taking up too much space and was at that perfect level to duck under but as soon as you stand up you smack your head. I feel it opened up the room a good bit.

Did some work tonight. Got a piece of pegboard up and some shelves. Also hung two posters I got for free.

I made a small piece for my wrenches. It gave me an extra two drawers of space in my small craftsman tool box. I wanted to make it taller but I wouldn't be able to comfortably reach the tools that were there. That's the only thing I don't like about my work bench I feel it's too deep.

I got some small shelves up as well. its nice to have more storage and to make it my own. More tomorrow hopefully!

Congrats, and it's a nice start you have going. You might want to keep an eye on Craigslist, or the habitat for humanity store. You can usually find old cabinets cheap and just throw a coat of paint on if you're on a budget.

Did some more work tonight. Got a larger shelf up and rigged a light under it to help illuminate my work bench. I only had one spare bulb but it helps a lot.

Also got close to finishing my bench grinder restoration.

Also got a nice shelf with a bar under it from work yesterday. It was used in the old locker room. Gonna put that up as soon as I finish more walls. I'm getting there fellas!

Great start! About the same size as the garage i just built 2 years ago. As for your initial problem..something like this might help... http://www.northshorecommercialdoor.com/gadothbystsh1.html

I have the same problem with my garage but mine is only seaping in under the door weather stripping due to my garage faceing to the west...(most rain comes from the west here). if yours is seaping under the walls also you might have to go the route you first talked about and cut in a drain.

Hey fellas. I got some rearranging and cleaning today. As some of you may know I got married a couple weeks ago and haven't had much time for garage stuff. Now that stuff has settled down I'm glad to be back out there even if its just cleaning.

Congrats.
Thats a nice sized garage for your first. I gradually increased in garage size from my parents 10x15 to my current 24x32 detached.
My 1 bit of advice, paint the walls and ceiling white soon. It will make the place so much brighter. Even if you don't have all the walls finished, paint what is done. Do it now before you fill the garage and have more stuff to move later.
I moved all my stuff in when we moved to this house knowing that I would insulate and drywall later. Now I'm trying to hang drywall, tape, mud and paint while navigating around the mass of tools and parts in the center of the room. I will end up moving stuff 2 more times so I can paint all the walls and ceiling. Wish I had done it before. I've roughly doubled the amount of tools I have since we moved in. (parts washer, press, welding table, bigger compresssor)
You can probably get 5 gallons of flat ceiling white and all the brushes and rollers for under $150, so its a fairly cheap project.
