Went mostly in on Tekton

As I noted in another post, my job changed again and I now need to provide my own tools. I got real used to having a full set at home and did not want to break into that as much as I could by bringing them to work.

A little background about my job. It is a supervisory role in a light diesel equipment shop. Lots of skid steers, mini exes, telehandlers, small farm tractors, and some landscape equipment. However, there is a healthy mix of Komatsu construction equipment as well as some diesel trucks from 3/4-1 1/2 ton and some dumpers.

Now, I am the shop foreman and as such I will not be wrenching most of the time. Lots of purchasing, record keeping, one on one training and teaching, and general fleet management. The tools are mostly for show. The general manager of the company wanted me to have tools so I have tools.

Here is what I got. I did manage to get the majority of their USA made line. I really wanted to get the socket sets just to see what they were all about but the GW deal through Tool Exchange is just too good to pass up and plus I have a great deal of experience with GW sockets and trust them. That is a 16 pc screwdriver set. Probably could have gotten away with the 12 pc but oh well. The torx driver set. The 6 pc pliers set. 4 pc snap ring plier set which will need to be supplemented with other sizes. Non Tekton magnetic pickup tool and Channellock brand picks which I got because they were USA and I wanted the extruded screwdriver handle. These seem to be excellent middle of the road quality and cost a whole 11 dollars.

I'm probably not going to use the lineman pliers or the small slip joints but you never know. Ive never had slip joints that small before so maybe I will find them to be handy.

Here is where they will live. Top drawer of my older model KRA some number 36" wide.

Here is the box.

I think all the tools combined in the entire box will equal the price I paid for the box PLUS the matching top chest used on CL last year for $900. Went with the Snap On box instead of my NAPA roll cart mostly for security reasons but you know...I'm the boss....I have to look the part right.....right.....:headscrat

Hopefully I can give these Tektons a good enough workout to draw some conclusions about them. First impressions are that the pliers look and feel a lot like Channellocks. The screwdriver handles are nice because they are triangular. I find the stubby handle and the next size down from the biggest to actually feel the best.

Congrats on the new job and that's a nice looking box and set of tools. The local Family Farm and Home stores frequently have buy one/get one half off sales on their entire Tekton lineup. They carry the full line.

Tekton is a good company. Where Toptul failed, Tekton triumphed. Price point, quality, availability, and most importantly--no questions asked warranty.

i think that you'll like the triangular handle screwdrivers. i have a set of Snap-on STD triangular handle screwdrivers and use them when a good grip is needed.

I like Tekton; I think they're a company that's doing things right. The import stuff they bring in tends to be very good quality, and they do make an effort to sell US made stuff as well.

That screwdriver set you bought is probably the best deal in screwdrivers anywhere right now. Those handles feel great in the hand, and the rest of the screwdriver is excellent quality as well. I've been looking for an excuse to buy a set, but I have screwdrivers coming out my ears.

Are the pliers/cutters US made? I thought those were Taiwan.

I bought a set of stubby SAE Tekton wrenches to fill a hole in my toll collection. They are very nice looking wrenches. Broaching is good, and chrome is about as good as chrome gets...nice wrenches.

The USA made Tekton pliers are made by Wilde Tools. Why they are not more popular is beyond me..
Thanks for calling this to my attention. Amazon has a set for $50.00 that looks very nice. According to comments on their web site, half are US and half are China.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011L0CPVE/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Clearly listed in the description...
Set Includes:

(1) 6-1/2 in. slip joint pliers, Made in the USA
(1) 8 in. slip joint pliers, Made in the USA
(1) 7 in. high-leverage diagonal cutting pliers, Made in China
(1) 8 in. long nose pliers, Made in China
(1) 8 in. lineman's pliers, Made in China
(1) 10 in. groove joint pliers (1-1/2 inch jaw capacity), Made in the USA

Unfortunately the diagonal cutters are made in China. That's one item I demand to be made in the US because Diagonal cutters need to be harder than a *****'s heart or they'll wear out fast. Even the best diagonal cutters will wear out, so the Chinese ones just won't cut it in my world.

I will probably be supplementing them with A set of Pro America cutters in the future. Excellent quality on those.

The Tekton stuff I've seen all looks good but are their ratchets and wrenches any better than Husky or Kobalt? Husky stuff is GW with a different name. Kobalt appears to be the same as Tekton (same ratchet design at least). Is Tekton better or do they just do a better job putting together sets that make sense for a mechanic's needs?

Got pick and choose what each brand does best. Tekton do some good bits such as the screwdrivers and pliers, sunex or proto for impact rocketry, gearwrench ratchets and chrome sockets are good and deal prices make them no brainer choice when shopping at this tool level.
Would only buy decent wrenches though as cheap/mid range ones poor tolerance and bulky generally, stahlwille one of my favourite for superb wrenches and not stupid prices .

I know GW sets have all 6-point sockets were as the husky stuff saddles you with 12 pointers. That alone makes GW>Husky.

That is a lot of it. Many supposed, all inclusive socket sets seemingly needlessly tend to give you full 1/4 and 3/8 drive 6 pt sets and then start going 12 pt with the 1/2 drive. I get the physics but not the logic.

I have GW combos because they were (before Tektons new line of wrenches) the only readily available long pattern combo wrench at a Craftsman price. Premo brands were the only way to go unless you were lucky enough to find the old SK/Craftsman Pro wrenches on a good sale and then the larger sizes were a little limited.

Nice set of Tekton drivers!

I bought one (the #2 phillips) just to put it in the rotation and see how it feels. I like it. If I wasn't so close to completing my Proto yellow set I'd probably go all in on the Tekton.

I've found eBay or HD's website to be a good place to buy Wilde stuff, but you can also buy it directly from their website.. I have like 3 of their pliers I bought just to throw in a small kit for my motorcycle. Fortunately, I haven't needed to use them - but some of their pliers are different than your "normal" versions. I have their small pump pliers with very aggressive teeth on them compared to channellock, and a joint more commonly found with slip joints.

Wilde makes cutters too, but only up to 7" I think.
