Howdy all!

Stopped by Costco to check out the specs on a compressor (below) and saw this scaffolding for $147.00. 70" tall but stackable, 6'x6'x29", 750 lb capacity, 73x28 plastic platform with 4 large locking casters. Just what the doctor ordered to finish my 10' ceilings! Unit felt sturdy, but I doubt I'd stack them if they'll fit thru a 30" door!

Now, for the compressor.

I know, I know, but sometimes Costco gets special builds at certain mfgrs and this looks interesting.

I was all ready to purchase a 60 gal 7hp unit at Homers but the actual "running" HP is only 3. This Coleman unit has a running HP of 3.6 which figures out to 8.4 hp by the usual compressor bogus stickers. The rest of the specs are:

13.4@40
11.5@90
165 max pressure
3450 Rpm
15Amp, 230V

What are your feelings on this unit? I don't need anything bigger (I usually use my pancake) and the price is right.

I've included pics of the unit, the motor sticker, the shelf tag and the box. I Googled the model# and came up with nuthin, even over at the Coleman site. I have until Monday mornin to make up my mind (with your help) because Mon is the last day of 12 months no interest.

Opinions? Theories?

Thanks!

you know, I tried taking pics of a bed at costco to show my wife, and a employee asked me to stop. (like I going to listen to him) I keep taking pics, then the manager asked me to leave if was going to keep taking pics. WTF???

on the other hand. my dad has that compressor, though he hasn't used it yet so I can't comment on it.

Its not a two stage, only single stage, yet it says 165 psi. rather odd, as I've never seen a single stage go above 125 or so. pump has to work darn hard to go from zero to 165 in one stage. You will, of course, have to regulate that down to something useful.

Jeostang,
The dept head saw me taking pics, but I told him I was giving the pics to my wife so she could get me the right birthday presents. He grinned and said feel free!

Charles,
Yep, I know it's single stage, but the same size compressor (single) @ Sears goes to 150 so I'm still in the ballpark. The one at Depot ($429.00) is 135psi, 11.7@40 and 10.3@90.

Anybody familiar with this pump? The AL lines are a concern, but I could always swap them out for copper.......

Thanks for the replies!

My eaton kicks off at like 140 or 145.

thats actually pretty impressive, but Id want to hear it run first. Its a 3450 rpm motor, so its probably going to be turning pretty fast. If your budget doesnt allow for a super expensive compressor, this sounds promising. Oil lubed, at least partially made in USA, and cast iron

It's going to be LOUD!!

If noise is a concern, find something that is running at a much lower RPM (like under 1,000).

Otherwise it looks like a decent unit. I bet it's a US made tank with a import pump and motor.

Keep in mind that Costco has the "lifetime" warranty on everything it sells!! Keep your reciept and bring it back ten years from now, you'll probably get your money back!

As for the scaffold, that might make a great cherry picker too!!! A little 2k lbs winch and you'll be yanking motors out with it (Toyotas not Hemis!)

You can go in and look around without a membership, just tell them at the door you're going to the Pharmacy, but you need a membership card to make a purchase (except Pharmacy- but you'll need cash). They have two levels, base at like $40 a year and exec level at like $100. The exec level gets you 2% back on all your purchases at the end of the year and on a mailing list for their special coupons. Also, they only take cash, checks, Costco or American Express Credit cards (no Visa or MC).

So what happens if you get a membership, buy the compressor and let your membership lapse? I wonder if there is some stipulation that you have to be a member in good standing to return an item (ie, if the compressor dies in 5 years).

Now this thread is funny....someone posted a compressor like that and everyone said it was junk....now the really funny part in that thread I was the only one that had a similar compressor. I like it, does everything I need.

good luck

No strings. If you're only interested in one item you could check around for a family member or someone at work with a membership to go with for the purchase. We hit the Costco in our neighborhood usually once a week for supplies.

The AOSmith is an Americam made motor, the compressor is Cast Iron (won't be too loud), and it depends on how the pully ratio is as to how fast the compressor spins. All in all I think this is a decent buy, I would check the welds on the tank to be sure that they are smooth and look good. Go for it, as someone else mentioned keep your receipt.

Howdy Again~
I bit the bullit and picked one up this PM.

The pulley ratio is 3 to 1, so with a motor RPM of 3450 I figure th pump to be running at 1150 or so. Not quite the 700-800 I wanted, but I'm sure it will work!

Thanks for the help, guys!

The stores are concerned about competitors coming in taking pictures in order to steal their ideas. I used to work for the largest retailer in the world, in the architecture group, as well as merchandise planning group. We would go to competitor's stores to check them out. On several occasions, store security would follow us around and they'd be very blatent about it too. The first sign of a camera (this was way before camera phones and small digi-cams) and they'd ask us to leave, sometimes escorting us out. It never happened to me or anyone with me, but I know of former coworkers who actually had camera's confiscated and film "accidentally" exposed. It's a cut-throat business out there.
