I have the metric in the Red holder as well as SAE in Yellow.

I mainly use the smallest ones and have held up good so far. The holder does a good job at keeping them a set.

I like that they are somewhat concave between the corners of the hex.

I have the more expensive set. The keys are more comfortable to use than the standard hex shaped keys due to the round shape and the plastic coating. If you will be using them often, this may be a consideration. Otherwise, I'm sure the steel quality is the same for both sets.

Oh combined wisdom of the interwebs, please guide me.

I'm about to get a hex key set, and I have my eyes set on Wera.
There is this set

And this that is quite a bit cheaper

Can anyone tell me what difference besides a different surface treatment and rubbercoating?

It seems like a big price difference.

I have the green coated ones and they are the best I have used. However, they can feel slippery and the roundness seems odd when I am used to a hex shape in my hand. They seem harder to hold for me.

I bought the more expensive Wera Hex keys made from round stock for a part time gig as bicycle mechanic. I was on my 3rd free replacement set from Sears, and decided to get something better. They work great and don't show any signs of wearing out, but I will say that the plastic covers are becoming a nuisance. They have taken a few bumps and bruises over the years and now they get stuck in the holder, and I don't believe the size is marked on the actual allen keys. I thought about calling them for replacements, but the actual tools still work fine, so I am not sure how that phone call would go.

I've got the two of the first set. Found them on Amazon about 2 years ago for about $15 each, so they do go on sale occasionally.

I also got the round version, they are very good: they can get out a fastener that I can feel is going to round off with my other set and once they have been able to take out one that was already rounded.

I'd recommend you to go for this set though.

It has a clever magnet built into the holder with which you can easily magnetize/demagnetize your hex keys (or screwdrivers). I love that feature!
