I'm thinking of picking up a 12 pc set of wera screwdrivers. I was wanting some reviews of the lasertip design and durability. If anybody has any reccomendations of a better set of screwdrivers, I'd love to hear the opinions on those too. I dont care about the price really, just the quality.

Honestly I don't know if they come much better. I just did a mini review here about them, with good pictures of the lasertips and the grips.

I'm about a month in right now and the tips are still showing little signs of wear. I'm very happy so far.

I've tried just about every screwdriver you can think of, and these are my favorite next to the Bahco (Belzer) Ultra-grip drivers sold by McMaster-Carr. The reason I like those isn't because of the grips, it's because the steel lasts forever. I've had some going on ten years in an industrial environment and they're still usable.

sorry I only have the Wera chiseldrivers w/o the laser tips. They work great so far since about 5 years. Lasertip... i also would like to know how long they last. I only have one PH2 Lasertip in my collection but didn`t used it yet for work just to "play" , the Lasertip holds the screws very good in any position (and vice versa :) )

Yes, they are very very nice. You do have options though: Snap-on, Felo, PB Swiss, Wiha, Wurth (OEM?) etc etc.

I considered the snap-ons and the pb swiss, but i like the idea of the lazertip, dependent on the functionality of it...

I can give you a little background on theory, maybe it will help your decision.

I used to operate the laser welder/marker at work quite often, so I am pretty experienced with what happens to the metal.

Much like with traditional welding, the weld area can experience carbide precipitation, which is a reaction that happens when the metal is heated. It forms carbides which then precipitate or condense into globules in the metal structure.

The happens on the edges of some laser welds/cuts and causes that area to be extremely hard and brittle.

So basically, you end up with an extremely hard edge backed by softer metal, much like a bimetal saw blade.

Because of this grooves in the Lasertips aren't just grooves, they're actually small raised lines of extremely hard metal that contains carbides, harder than a screw head or even the screwdriver tip itself, and this happens because of what happens under the intense heat of the laser beam.

In theory, the Lasertips should keep their grab for a very long time due to the transformation that occurs in the metal.

I'm currently testing this, and they're holding well so far at one month. As long as they can keep some grab for at least one year, I'll consider it "worth it". I'd gladly pay $30 a year for drivers that grab this well.

Yeah, I work maintenance at Toyota Manufacturing in KY, and we use a laser to mark our crank shafts and connecting rods. We also have induction hardeners and hardening ovens too... I have to fix all this **** when it goes down, so I know all about hardening metal.

Having never used Wera screwdrivers before, I wanted to make sure these tips were good quality, and not just a gimmick. I've used their Torx drivers and noticed they held up pretty decent, but they dont get near the use screwdrivers get...

Snap on and Felo do not fit like WERA and PB, especially the phillips, and poor fit = faster wear on the tips.

Just got my set in and I like them but have not had a chance to really work them yet. Seem to fit pretty good, nice upgrade from my c-man pros.

@iandh:

Thanks for the information. Having spent too much time in the 70's (when flashy marketing terms began to replace quality), warning bells sound when I see something like "lazertip". Before that decade they would have called it something like, I dunno, maybe "screw-0-matic". The metallurgy & process you describe sounds legitimate - I'll have to try some myself.

i got my set from sears.com, but i didnt know about chadstoolbox

btw, that bottle opener is pretty sweet. I have one that goes with the Klein screwdrivers and nutdrivers my dad got for me when i was 16, so it would be cool to have an upgraded one for my upgraded screwdrivers!
