In a way of introduction, I am posing a question as to recommendations of a contractor to build my new shop in west Tennessee. I am retiring in October and moving to West Tennessee. I am a long time HAMB member and am finally at the point where I have acreage and spouse approval to build my "dream" garage'!

I am think about a building which architecturally blends with the house, 40x50 shop. Probably around 12-14 ft wall height and clear span. I need to have shingled roof and lower portion exterior in brick, at least on the front.

Any recommendations?

Sorry, cannot help with recommending a specific builder in west Tennessee. Suggest you ask your neighbors or go online and search.

Visit an architect's office first and let him design the structure for you. Then ask him for referrals of builders. Some excellent builders will not waste time with you until you have a definite plan and know what you want. They don't design garage, they build them. They won't wait for you to decide upon a 28 foot or 30 foot wide garage.

Another option is to visit the local village office and request a list of recent building permits so you can see who built structures and then visit the address to see how well they did.

Also visit the courthouse and do a search on recent lawsuits within a year. Look for contractors who are being sued or are suing the homeowner so you know which ones to stay away from when you ask for bids.

Finally, do a search on GJ for finding contractors. There are many threads here with that topic.
