A lot of it has to do with fiscal policy and the FIRE sector (finance, insurance and real estate) sopping up too much money from the productive economy. It really bothers me when a company like Western Forge goes out. They held it down for decades. And for the price, the guys and gals at the company made great tools. I genuinely enjoy using their CMan re-branded pliers. Thanks to WF employees, past and present.

They do take a significant portion of people's income don't they?

Sad news. Another page turns in the fall of U.S. manufacturing. I had hoped we would see the trend reverse. Companies still close plants and move manufacturing overseas despite the hoopla about our economic rebound.
Something is wrong with American consumerism. We will gladly pay a restaurant nearly $20 for a plate full of hormone and saltwater injected chicken parts slathered with glow-in-the-dark chemicals that destroy ones' stomach linings. Yet, many balk at paying the same for a pair of USA made pliers that will last a lifetime, if a cheapo import version is available for a few dollars less.
When a plant like Western Forge shuts down, many of its customers will be forced to seek manufacturing alternatives overseas, furthering the decline.

Before you go about American workers being high paid here is a tale. One poster whose job was setting up automated plants, told of one the lights out plants that shut down and moved offshore, because the executive overhead was too high. Koreans were much cheaper, and likely better educated. Any plants reshoring will be of the lights out type.

Well, here it is. The surplus auction at WF.

Will be an online auction. I'm going to try to get a time to walk around the plant and see if I can pick up any equipment for myself or the company I work for.

Quick glance at the sale flyer, we're installing a rebuilt #14 CECO dieforger right now. That equipment may be old, but for the right process nothing else works better. We still have 1 old #8 single valve dieforger that I'm going to install new controls on before I hang it up and go fishing.
