Re: anyone seen these socket trays?

We have been getting bombarded with requests for magnetic versions. We are working on it. I am not sure why the necessity for it however? The sockets never fall off or over in normal tool box use. I am assuming people are looking for all the sockets to stay put if the entire tray is tipped over while carrying it to a job site?

You're probably right. That's my only concern, how stable the sockets are when moving the tray around. I have a socket tray with the spring tabs that everyone's seen, and while it can be tough to get a socket off (esp the short 1/4" ones) I know I can carry it by the handle at any angle and nothing is falling off.

Other than that these look to be just what I need and will be ordering soon. Well done!

If you were to have them touching and push out all the extra space what kind of footprint are we talking about?

We will try to make a short video demonstrating these so everybody gets an idea of how well the sockets will stay put on the holders. How well sockets stay on such a short pin is quite amazing!

As they sit in that picture the largest part of the footprint would be roughly 12"x25"

This is really cool being able to talk directly the manufacturer like this. That's something largely unheard of in today's day and age. :)

I'm sure he appreciates the input as much as we appreciate the opportunity to deliver it. I like the fact that the 1/2 trays are cut in half. If you do take the thing out of the box, you don't have to take all of them. Saving room in your cart or on the floor.

I'll tell ya what though, i'd definately be in line for a set of green/black...

BTW

Thank you for coming on board here and answering some questions. Definately appreciated!

This manufacturer and Zoro Tools have got to be two of the smartest companies I've seen in a while. The members on this site are constantly wanting to spend money, and giving them a little attention is going to have orders flowing in. I hope the company reps stick around and structured feedback discussions like this continue. In the end, it will be good for both sides!

There has been some confusion as to why the 1/2 trays are a two piece design. We are going to make a blueprint for the website showing all the dimensions of the trays. And how the 1/2 trays can be arrange either horizontally or vertical. A fully load set of 1/2" sockets can get real heavy so it is nice just to grab the tray that is needed most.

Also we have put the different color holders on our "to do list". We may redo pins on these holders to match the brands most common socket sets.

Welcome to GJ, Wrestling Machine.

Its a shame that in this day and age it can be such a struggle to be able to contact and talk to a manufacture directly. We maybe not be able to compete with the big import companies in price, but we can guarantee we will alway be able to beat them in customer service and quality. Its just some of the benefits you can get from buying USA made products.

Positive criticism and feedback are the only way we can meet our goal of providing the absolute finest product and service that we can offer. Without it we will fall into the trap of having a stale product that sustains and not thrives. Our customers feedback is our most cherished possession. We will assure you that just because we may not act on your feedback immediately, we are listening and recording it.

So we must thank you the members of Garage Journal as well as Garage Journal itself to allow us a place to receive input as well as to give back any that we can!

Alex- The reason why I would like my socket racks with magnets on them is because over the course of time with opening and closing my drawer the racks move and shift. Part of the problem is when I open and close my drawers I dont stand in front of my box. I stand wayyyyy off to one side when opening and closing my drawers due to the fact that my project car is only a couple inches away from my box. Ive been thinking about glueing magnetic strips to the bottom of all my racks but time and money isnt something I have a lot of...

Dan thanks for the info! Magnets would defiantly help keep the holders in place as well as stopping the rattle you get from the sockets jiggling around. We are defiantly working on it do to the huge volume of requests for it. Our biggest hurdle so far has been trying to find a source for USA manufactured magnets.

I must buy these for my impacts ASAP! my sockets are Ingersoll rand brand has anybody complained about these fitting? the wall thickness is not real thick.

None so far. It really depends on what size sockets and drive size your set contains. The holders are fairly universal as far as where the sockets are placed on the holder. Here is a picture with some import and crafstman impact sockets on various holders. Notice how the entire set can be moved left or right in most cases to gain or loose clearance between the sockets.

2012-12-04_10-14-43_330.jpg

Also here is a photo demonstrating how well the sockets stay on the pins when the holder is tipped at an angle. These are 1/4" deep well which tend to be the worst offenders to tipping over. The holders will go almost vertical before any problems occur.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing some labels or something etched on. Makes it easy to see a size while picking up a socket.

Do you think custom orders could be placed for labels and no labels as I see there's kind of a split opinion regarding them.

Thanks for the feedback! We have a few ideas we are throwing around to make modular label system for the guys wanting labels. Custom engraving may also be a option in the future. Right now we do not do the engraving in house, but we plan on doing it soon. At that time some custom engraving would be possible since we would be in total control over the process.

They sell socket stickers on ebay cheap. You could buy a set of those and just place them near the proper pins. I like the universal idea, as no two sockets are really exactly the same.

Westling, let us know when you can get different anodized colors. Black, orange and green would look sick. Also, can you mill some round slots on the underside of the holders to place button magnets? That would be a great addition.

Looks great, thanks for posting. May I ask how snugly the sockets fit on the pegs?

We will defiantly post it here when we get some different colors made. Are you looking for a magnet under every socket or just under the corners to keep the tray in place?

Looks great, thanks for posting. May I ask how snugly the sockets fit on the pegs?

It really does depend on the quality of the socket as some imports fit a lot looser than some of the quality brands. The sockets fit loose to the pin so there is zero resistance when putting it on. Gravity is all that holds the socket in place. But as demonstrated by the picture above they are not so loose that they will tip over. I hope that makes sense!

Button magnet with 1/4 turn lock, then you can order them "IF" needed. I think most here will "stick" with them. Also good when like me and take a rack with me under truck and "stick" it to the frame or somewhere in reach.

Re: anyone seen these socket trays?

magnets or even just some little rubber feet on the bottom would be a pretty nice touch...

Overall, however, there really is no room to complain about this product for the price. It looks to be well made, USA made, and reasonably priced.

I'll be ordering mine soon!! A holder for 1/4" bits would be easy to make, and might be a nice addition to the set. I would love green, but might have to get these asap.

Rubber feet are in the works and will be an option soon on the website. The magnets are a good idea. The cost of machining a spot for the magnet in every plate would be alot so it could be a custom option. Like we mentioned earlier, finding a good USA made magnet supplier is proving to be difficult.

Great idea! We will definatly look into it. We are currently talking with our plater about our different color options.

Re: anyone seen these socket trays?

Westling Machine- getting back to the whole magnet thing... if you look at the pic I posted of my sockets you'll see one small blue rack. Its made by Titan and has a thin magnetic strip on the bottom of it. The thickness of the magnetic strip is about as thick as a penny and runs from end to end of the rail. Believe it or not its enough to make the rail NOT move (in my opinion). Now if you look where my 1/2 sockets are.... Id stay there is around 3/8" clearance from where the tip of hanson tray to where top of the drawer is. Basically what I'm trying to tell you is that if I had a magnetic strip ANY thicker than 3/8" tall the drawer would not close. Not saying you have to use thick magnetic strips... just wanna give you some insight on how thick you can go.

I been thinking about a bright green rollaway with black handles, a black liner with bright green holders would look good.

That way I can have shallow, semi-deep and deep all on one tray?

Re: anyone seen these socket trays?

damn those are nice. As mentioned, for those prices it's not worth making them, unless you've got nothing better to do with yourself.

I could go either way on the labels, but the no labels would help with the Hanson OCD.

Thanks for the heads up. We have not seen those trays before. At this time what we are thinking is offering our holders the way they are with an option to add either rubber feet or magnets to the back side to keep them in place in the tool box.

We still plan on trying to add an option of magnets to the top as well to keep the sockets in place. But we still think a movie showing how well the sockets stay put without them will prove the magnets on top unnecessary. But some guys just may like the positive feel of the magnet holding the socket in place securely.

What are the chances of adding a 3rd row to the 1/4" and 3/8" racks?

Thanks for the feedback! This has been another fairly large request and will be adding it as an option soon.

Re: anyone seen these socket trays?

im digging the third row idea too, at least for the 3/8 sets, cause ive got them in semi deeps also, either the semi deeps or you could add your impacts to it also, unless you had shallow and deep, then just buy 2 sets.

im liking where these holders are going....

Re: anyone seen these socket trays?

Holy Smokes, this is an awesome thread. The product looks beautiful, is USA-made by people who seem to be trying to source all USA materials, and the manufacturer is right here among us, talking like a Regular Joe?

We should put together a group-buy to celebrate some upcoming holiday/time of year/whatever to support this company.

Just ordered the 1/2" Standard Tool Holder Set-$35.95 shipped. I'll post some information about them when they arrive.:)

Awesome! I just got some 3/8 impacts that need a home. I'll have to evaluate whether I can justify a set right now, or if I will wait and see if a group buy idea gains momentum.

Westling Machine, you should look into making more types of tool storage fixtures.. like wrench racks, pliers racks, screwdriver racks, extension holders, etc. I think that stuff would sell like hotcakes on here.

I second the opinion to create more type of organizers, especially if they are going to be colored and made of the same material. i would be in for some wrench racks and extension holders for sure
