Looks real. With the handle kicked out to the side, you could drill a hole up close to a wall.

Thank God for power tools:willy_nil

Exactly. It's a corner brace. Lots of them were made and used. There is an amazing variety of specialty hand tools.

Yeah that's a really cool looking old tool.

Does anyone have any first hand experience in playing with one? If the gear arrangement works as I'm imagining it does (just two bevel gears), then to turn the drill clockwise you'd need to crank the handle counter clockwise. Is that correct?

Yes but you're probably working over your head and left-handed so lefty-loosey becomes lefty-drilly or something like that. And it's not the weirdest. Sorry for the poor quality pics.

No. The bit will turn the same direction as the crank in picture shown.

That, sir, is a Millers Falls corner brace, and a very useful tool they are too!

It allows you to drill a hole right into a corner! Although largely superseded by power tools, especially the right angle drill, nothing can get closer to a corner than these!

Many serious craftsman prefer a brace to a power tool as it gives them more control, and of course these tools will still be giving good service long after most power tools have died!

Millers Falls were a U.S. manufacturer of top quality woodworking tools. Their heyday was in the 20's and 30's and their tools were top end! I have a few still in use today and wish they were still available! if you think of Millers Falls as the woodworking equivalent of Blackhawk you won't be far wrong!

In the U.K. people are starting to buy up tools by these older makers for restoration. Their biggest customers seem to be users who can't find anything as good new!

I remember seeing these in use by telephone installers.

Now that makes perfect sense!! They need a quick small hole as close to the wall as possible. I have seen them carry push drills to make quick holes for screws. Now need to plug in and lighter then cordless.
