I decided to start this thread do to the demand for this cart. Please post what you know or want to know about this cart.

I like the heavy duty wrinkle paint!
The wheels are nice and big.

The top is butcher block per say, what should it be sealed with?

I notice the sides are metal peg board, I was thinking of a screw driver holder, prybar or spray lubes.

The space on bottom of tool cart may hold Jack Stands.

glad ya picked one up. i put some oil into the slides and it slides like a dream. I picked up two of them. and they are a great buy.

Jastech, I use Formby's Tung Oil Finish on the butcher block tops for workbenches. Despite it's name, it's actually a wiping varnish. Which is good for a workbench application IMHO. Dries smooth and hard even when applied thick. Also easy to build up with many coats but thin enough to penetrate fairly deeply. Not something you'd want on your kitchen cutting board, but good for workbench surfaces.

Formby's Tung Oil Finish is readily available at the big box stores near me. I just put some nitrile gloves on and apply it with my hands. Usually takes 3 or 4 coats on a John Boos maple butcher block top to get it to the point where I want it. Make sure you do the edges and bottom too if you want to prevent warping,

It's a Whalen cart, but I'm not sure where it's made. They have a lot of Garage items at Sam's Club. I have 2 of the 6' benches by Whalen. I've had them for over 3 years and have been really happy with them. I just picked up one of the rolling cart's yesterday, but haven't put it together yet.

DWM, Thanks for the Tung Oil suggestion. I will need to get some as all I have close to that is tung spit!
My Dad and I picked up the display unit I had bought Friday of the 2 units. I had to take 8-bolts/nuts out of the verticle supports to lower it to approximately 30" high in order for it to fit in my Dads Jeep. So we'll take it out when this weather clears up.

I didn't like the quality of the bolts/nuts, I intern purchased 1/4" x 20 x 3/4" Grade 8 bolts/nuts to replace them with.

The drawers are nice and strong, far better then anything I have seen at Home Cheepo or Menards, we looked at the "rounded" cornered tool chest/rollaway too and not even close!
The drawers already have nice thick liners in them.

Yes, the drawers lock, with descent lock/key not the cheep tool box style.

Shall I take pics of drawers? Anything else?

I picked mine up Friday. Local store didn't have any, got my mom to pick it up 30 minutes away then got it from her. We got an additional 10% off for military discount, made it 97 out the door. I was pretty pleased until I opened the box. One of my drawers was jammed in the box, looked pretty warped, caused the bottom drawer to not come out either. I played with it for a few and got the drawer out. Realized that the rivets used to hold the drawers to the slides have broken (broke 4 of 6 on one drawer). I decided to keep it. put some small bolts and nuts in to replace the rivets. I installed mine all the way up. It's pretty damn tall, works well for me.

You do know it is adjustable, you can lower the height...and FWIW there is a ton of packing stuff inside that box, they must have dropped it from pretty high to do some damage?

Jastech, I picked one up today. The top is already finished, no need for anything until it needs refinishing.

IMHO this is a light duty box. Just keep that in mind before loading a lot of weight in the drawers. Note the load rating in the manual: 20 lbs. each for the top drawers, 50 lbs. for the bottom drawer. I honestly don't think the bottom drawer would last very long with 50 lbs. in it given the way the drawers are constructed.

It'll work fine for what I bought it for (car detailing stuff), but I wouldn't put a lot of weight on it without beefing it up. The caster channels only have small tack welds holding them in place. I suspect the handle won't stay on its mounting plates if you load up the cart and move it around by the handle on a regular basis. That part is kind of a shame, it wouldn't have taken much to make it better.

Well, I start with replacing all the bolts/nuts to Grade-8 as mentioned. Then I will look at other way to make it better.


In the bottom I plan on Jack Stands or a tool box, set of nut/bolt drawers, drawers for more tools and maybe even a little cabinet/box in bottom and 2 doors in front.


This would hold a lot of impact stuff so it can be a impact service cart? Or for doing brakes?

I can install a 20amp power strip on it and a L.E.D. light.

Bolt on some tool holders or paper towel/shop rag holder or for all them spray lubes I leave all over the shop, lol

I think the casters will be fine with weight, but the cart itself... I think it'd be iffy to put a lot of weight on it. Note that the existing fasteners that hold the top box to the legs started bending the sheet metal that the nutserts are in when I was tightening them (with a screwdriver). To really beef it up, I think it'd wind up being mostly a frame. Bolt a sheet of 1/2" plywood to the sides and back, and one to the bottom shelf. I'd still be concerned about the caster channels if it's going to be moved a lot. I'd want to cut the tack welds and put a 3/4" sheet of plywood underneath the bottom shelf.

I hate to rain on someone's parade. It's still a great cart for $99, but I'd personally be wary of putting a lot of weight on it and moving it around with that weight. Fairly strong large casters, but put together pretty weakly. My Home Depot had the original price showing as $299, and I never would have paid that much for it. The good news is that it's definitely worth $99. Load it up and see if it works for you. If not, beef it up or relegate it to lighter duties.

I obviously realize it is adjustable... Being 6'4", most work tables are not tall enough for me. FOr this, I chose to make it at max height (there is no way of knowing actual height until done) so make it at the tallest and see where it's at. I only stated that for anyone else who may not be 6'4', to think twice before setting it at full height.

Went to a HD that had (has) 4 left in Federal Way (for the local guys)
I passed. Looked great from 20 feet away. Up close it was so flimsy I couldn't handle it. The castors looks good but not great. I priced some castors there
(HD) and they were only 12$ ea. If you dont need heady duty and dont have time to build your own its probably a good deal.
Thought I'd toss in my 2cents.

just bought one and put it together - i was kind of impressed. the only complaint i have so far is the drawers are a bit stiff. i wouldnt throw an engine block on the top, but i have a heavy duty workbench for that kind of weight. for storage and extra work space i think its a good deal at 99. i do plan on adding another set of drawers under the 3 it comes with. sucker is pretty heavy and solid as is - for those willing to modify the legs i think it could probably hold some substantial weight on top....

ive read on gj many times of guys using them so i brought one with me($10 off $50 that i got in the mail) i asked at check out & the guy said"yes we do accept them". i was a bit shocked because their was no hesitation in his voice so im guessing you can use them on anything

Got two of them. One didn't have the nutserts for the casters, the other was dented up pretty good. No damage to packaging so I have to assume it came that way. I am OK with it for the price, but I will likely be careful with Whalen in the future.

Almost picked one of these up last night. Don't really need it but I'm sure I could find a use.

There was one in the return area at the front of the store. The box was a bit banged up but not too bad. It was clearly purchased and then returned, but not opened. I got a manager and tried to haggle, and when he said no I pulled out a HF coupon. He wouldn't take it on a "tool cabinet."

I would have picked it up for $80...but they can sit on it.
