I have an older makita that has served me well. It's light weight and powerful. Unfortunately over the years it's gotten weaker and does not hold a charge well any longer. I'm in the market for a new drill and I like the 1/4" impact drivers.

What do you guys use and recommend.

Makita 14.4. 6932 cordless and a corded 6952 makita impact driver. Both have great ergonomics and very good power.

Milwaukee fuel. It's the best you can buy at the moment.

I have the Craftsman nextec 12v impact. I love it. Had it little over a year and use it daily. I use it for probably 60-70% of my work. It looks like **** now but works great. I have to charge the battery anywhere from 3 days to a week depending how much it's used each day. I've had the same 3 batteries since I bough it. I also have the 3/8 drill and LED flashlight from the Nextec line. Love em all. Even my co-workers love the impact. They like to borrow it.

I have a Porter Cable 20v max impact driver and drill kit. It works fine for me. Also not as expensive as the other name brands.

Ridgid is great for the lifetime battery replacement. My dad has theirs, he likes it.

I scored a deal on my impact driver and drill set up at Lowes for 149.

That's a good set. I have a small hoarde of Makita 12v stuff... impact, screwdriver, drill, circ saw, and vacuum. Yes, vacuum. Works great for picking up dirt/dust off the laminate floors upstairs.

But to the point... the impact is pretty good. It's not super powerful, but plenty good enough for loosening rusty screws or driving small lag bolts / large wood screws.

Bosch 12v impact is awesome, IMO. Not quite as much power as the Milwaukee but it is lighter and more compact.

Depending on how much continued use/abuse you will give it they are both good choices. But I would have to say the Milwaukee might be built more solid.

I have had my Bosch for...2 or 3 years and I wouldn't trade it for the Milwaukee.

Where is cheapest place to buy the fuel series. I used a regular Milwaukee 1/4" drill and it ripped my arm back.

I am looking at the 18v dewalt I just don't like having only one battery.

I had the older version of that makita and I loved it. I would consider buying the updated version.

Depending on your needs, I'd go either M12 Fuel or M18 Fuel, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at Bosch, Makita, or either 12v or 20v DeWalt. I'd pass on the 18v XRP DeWalt stuff.

If it was me, i would buy a factory recon from these guys.

Even the m12 fuel has insane power in a very compact unit.

Okay. I saw home depot has a kit with a drill and an impact and you get a sawzall for free. I am Gunna see if the one near me will take the harbor freight 20% coupon and might get it from them. My makita lasted me a decent amount of time. And I don't want to drop the coin for the snap on impacts because I just feel other designs are better especially for the money

The Hitachi 18v lithium ion kit I got back in 2010 or so held up for a large remodel project and is still going strong.

But with that said, if they needed replacing I'd look very closely at the new Bosch hybrid impact driver/wrench. If you look at the pic below you'll see it's a 1/2" impact wrench that can take a 1/4" hex bit.

r51555v33.png

Only 1650 in/lbs (137.5 ft/lbs) of torque, though, so a separate, more powerful impact wrench would be necessary for bigger jobs. But's it's appealing for a guy like me who assumes he won't need a 1/2" impact wrench much.

Of course I also assumed I'd use the drill more than the impact when I bought that Hitachi combo back then. That turned out to be very wrong.

I would only buy Makita LXT impact drill drivers kits. I would get the ones with the 3 aH batteries instead of the 1.5 aH batteries. There are many bare tool that need the 3 ah batteries.

I have added a circ saw and a recip saw. I honestly have not used my corded tools in a long while.

Not to be controversial, but, only Makita and Bosch are global world class companies. The other brands mentioned are just North American brands.

Last month I bought the Milwaukee M18 combo with the drill and driver. I did not spring double for the "FUEL" model, though those who have say it's worth the extra. My only complaint is it no longer comes with the plastic case, which is important to me. The "handy contractor's bag" *****. Luckily Ebay has the correct case for $17.88 shipped. I use it several times a week and am very pleased. :)

Yeah, I certainly don't have any complaints with mine, what little use it has gotten, mainly repairing fences and a little bit of work on my Jeep, when I was switching between two different fastener sizes, it was just easier to have one size on the 2453 and the other on my 2454.

I have the tried and true DeWalt 18v drill and 1/4 impact. Excellent power and reliable as all hell. I've heard great things about the Milwaukee M18. If Bosch cordless tools are as nice as their corded tools, they're probably a safe bet as well.

Been happy with my 18v Dewalt. Purchased it about a year ago in a set along with a reciprocating saw, drill, light, 1/4 impact driver, charger and two bats. Can't say a single bad thing about the entire set.

18v DeWalt both and I also have a Snap-on impact - but oddly, I don't use the impacts as much as some other folks do.

A boat mechanic I know uses these all day long.

Ryobi for me here. Have the older blue set of the circular saw, reciprocating saw, and drill. Just purchased the new green 1/4" hex impact driver. Being able to interchange batteriesis my main reason for sticking with ryobi. No problems ever with them and decent cost.

I just retired my tried and true 14.4 dewalt impact driver after using it to install 10's of thousands of screws. It still works fine and my dad now uses it. I upgraded to the 20 volt dewalt brushless impact and it is way more powerful and a nicer tool, only time will tell if it is as reliable.

I'll vouch for the Milwaukee 18v fuel. I'm impressed with the electronic controls on it. Particularly the modulation and feel that you get with the gentle setting #1. Then #2 gives great power and feel for most everything you do with a 1/4 hex impact. But then, and what the 12v fuel doesn't give you, set it to #3 and you get big power to drive decent size lag screws and lug nuts (if they're not too stuck). #3 is like Honda CR500 setting, gotta be good and ready for the power hit. I stay away from it on standard wood screws as I've snapped quite a few of the heads right off.

Craftsman 19.2V with NiCad bats. Much heavier than the Dewalts guys at work use, but it works. It can't match the Dewalt when it comes to using holesaws in metal, but for driving self-tappers and such it does fine.

I see these tools like hammers. They all do the same, regardless of the brand and price. Feels different in your hand tho, different brands and models "handle" differently but again, they do the same thing and durability is also pretty even.

I've used makita, Bosch, Milwaukee, dewalt and ryobi. I own a ryobi 18v since 2006 I think. No complaints, just that other tradesman may look down on my I guess?

Recently, like two weeks ago I bought a Milwaukee m12 the brushless and more powerful they have in that line. It's definitively my favorite tool, I even use more finish screws (grk) than nails now (15g). Light and hella powerful!

So that would me my impact driver of choice now, using it all day long!

Milwaukee M12 here - both impact and drill. In fact, several of them. I keep one set in my tool bag ready to go at all times. The other set resides in my toolbox.

Love the thing
The only one I like better is the 1/2dr impact I bought. Got it for light duty stuff but have been doing a little everything with it including lug nuts
