OK, on my way to AK, the (Ford) RV transmission burps on exhaust pipe and send white smoke signals after a long steep pull up from Hoover Damn into Boulder City on a hot day. Stop early for the night and the weather is cooling down and we are going north and the transmission is acting fine.

Then a few hundred miles up the road, in MT, I think maybe I should have it looked at. Guy says he can't find anything, was I sure the fluid I saw was red. Yes, I'm sure it was transmission fluid. It is less than a pint low. From the little port inspection he could no drastic signs, and the fluid "looks good", no signs of being overheated and still a bright red color.

So I tell he it had near 50K on the fluid, so go ahead remove the pan to make sure there is nothing unusual and do a complete fluid and filter change and that might make me feel better. Go for lunch and run errands and get back as he is ready to put the fluid in. gets eight quarts or so in and low and behold, fluid is running out from under the thing. He had a rag wrapped around the fill tube, so he wasn't spilling it. Raised the lift for better inspection, and it was coming down the side of the engine. He suggested the fill tube might have a hole in it. He lowered it, and continued to fill it slowly, Then asked me to remove the dog house (engine cover), for a better look.

Looks like the filler/dip stick tube, tack welded to a bracket that was bolted to the engine, had broken apart. I had some putty like plumbing tape that I wrapped around it for a patch. Why do strange things happen to me?

Now for a question. What about transmission fluid around a the COP and plugs. Will that cause a problem? Cleaned up as good as we could.

OBTW, it was on a six post 26,000 lbs. Bend Pak(?) lift outside his shop for large vehicles. Margaret sees the rig up in the air and said "Wow, that's way cool, I bet you would like to have one of those!" I said no, it too big, but one for a car would be nice. "Yea, but wouldn't near as cool!"

I think you'll be ok if you got most of the ATF up. The cop/boots seal pretty good. It wouldn't be good if the ATF got on the porcelin of the plug though. It combined with high engine heat would probably cause the plug to fail. Recent service articles have advised against even touching spark plug porcelin with your fingers during installation. Hope you have a safe trip.
