What a MESS !!!

I went to the hangar 2 days ago and could not walk for all the **** in the floor. I clean it constantly but it takes only a few projects to turn it into a cluster fu**.
Air hoses ,ext cords,parts, tools ,beer cans, roll arounds, jack stands ,more beer cans .Not to mention an airplane right in the middle of the mess.
I worked on it yesterday and this morning. It is done and ready to go to heck again.
While cleaning I also did a lot of small projects. Broken flatscreen base mount,new seat for small tractor,project for neighbors kid son ,repair vise jaws,etc.
I suppose the constant reoccuring clutter is a testament to the fact that I am always out there doing what we all love to do.

A while back I was frustrated because I didn't have any storage space, I was always moving stuff around to make space for the current project. So, inspired by Jack Olsen and the 12 Gauge Garage, I made a huge effort to sort everything out and even throw some stuff away

I ended up having more storage space than I could believe and always had space available for the current project. Try it!

You need some carts to throw the stuff on. Wheel them to the side or over to where most of the stuff goes. The floor is a bad place for anything. Dirty, trip hazard, etc. But, I know folks like you and I tend towards that myself. That's why I know about carts.

Try a 5S approach

I hear you. I somethings think a hoarder/slob lives in my gargage because it couldn't be me making all that mess. It gets to a point I have to stop working altogether and clean the whole mess up before I can continue on a project. I've been gradually adopting a simplified version of a 5S approach by tossing out what I do not need and organizing what I do need. THIS!!! I use all the stuff but it really gets out of hand. If anyone ever saw the projects that I turn out whether they be automotive or building related, you would never believe that they came from this total disaster area!

Is it your hanger on a lease to the airfield? we were looking at a hanger last month..and you can buy the lease on the property build a hanger...but you do not own it..I really did not get that...it was mostly for a buddy a buddy of mine who has a few planes in IL.....I was standing at the end of the runway with him and (7500ft) thinking if I had a hanger late night dragster tests would be pretty fun...Thaners were 150 a month...do still thinking on it.

My wife is awesome and comes out to the garage to help sometimes as well as even clean up things. She hasn't made it out there in a couple months now so the garage is an extreme mess. It became so much of a mess that I started my garage refurb thread (see signature). Of course, I had to work on a couple cars since that cleanup project began, so it is becoming more of a mess again.

I have no solution if you are working on a month long project other than I guess putting everything away once a week (arbitrary timeline). I realize that it was said some of you claim to use everything, but you can't use everything all the time. Those couple of large items which you may use one week but not use the next will make a big difference by not laying around for 2 out of the 4 weeks of that project.

We dented a 3/8" QT swinging target with a .44 pistol. I dented the target tree with the .22 - of coarse I missed the target and hit the tree...

I love that old work bench.It is 60 years old ,wood and solid as a rock. I refuse to do any work on it because every scratch tells a story of 3 generations.Thank you for noticing my old friend.

The bullet trap takes 44mag with no problem.I find that a target hanging on a chain or swinging is like having it in a fixed position.The speed of the bullet carries it straight through. You really need a good angle on the back of the target. If you notice I have put 1x4's under the rear to increase the angle.
The bullet would enter ,ricochet ,and bury in the 6" of sand but it would often kick out some of the lead that was in the sand.Increasing the angle solved that.

Before you leave the garage for the day spend 30 mins putting tools back and generally tidying up and dealing with the rubbish (trash). Soon becomes habit and solves the mess issue.

I'm pretty **** about cleanliness - Whiloe I use and ppile up tools until I'm done a particular job, I clean as I go (including vacuuming up wood or bondo dust immediately) and then I clean completely after every job, even if on the same car.

I don't like to work in dirt/dust/grease, don't want to have to step over hoses, cords, tools and never rarely my tools out if not in use. I'd rather know something is in the tool box than spend time looking for the last place I put it!
